The Final Cut (DVD) ... DVD released 22 August, 2005 at Entertainment in Video / Features of the DVD: PAL / While it works better as a somber mood piece than a futuristic thriller, The Final Cut posits a unique what-if scenario that some viewers will find fascinating. In a role that calls for his low-key One Hour Photo persona, Robin Williams plays an expert "cutter" who's in demand for his ability to distill anyone's lifetime into a feature-length "rememory" film that highlights the better side of anyone's nature. His profession is made possible by the "Zoe" chip, a prenatal brain implant capable of recording a person's entire lifetime--a technology opposed by a former cutter (Jim Caviezel) and puzzled over by Williams' on-and-off girlfriend (Mira Sorvino). First-time writer-director Omar Naim divided critics with his impressive visual style and lackluster screenplay, which fails to account for the larger implications of the Zoe chip's exploitation. Still, the film contains several intriguing ideas that place it among other sci-fi films like Gattaca, suggesting one of the many potential controversies that await us in a future where ethics and technology are not always compatible. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

... what it takes in the serious arena. The film revolves around Hakman (Robin Williams). The world now allows people to be fitted with Zoe implants, which record everything they've ever done, and so when one dies, he is able to edit their memories into something to be shown at their funeral, this, of course, giving the ability to make a horrible person look like a great one with some clever editing (in a not so subtle criticism of the mass media). However, when a former editor, Fletcher (James Caviezel), offers Hakman a...more

So what happens? It starts at a funerals wake, where friends of the deceased gather to watch a home movie together, at the request of Jude ( the deceased) in his will. The friends are Ray, a loud mouth cockney a bit 'rough', Lisa, Rays timid girlfriend. Sadie, Judes widow. And other friends, Mark, John, Bill, Tony, Burdis and Dominic. The home video turns out to be of them, Jude had been secretly filming them all, he had cameras everywhere, even in the loos. The things the video uncovers are both shocking and funny, but in all extremely revealing and damaging. My thoughts. Well, the movie was good, not brilliant but watchable. The events that unfold ...  Read the complete review

This film has a very good premise. Robin Williams plays Alan Hakman, a cutter (with a very bad pun for a character name). A person who views the memories of the dead and constructs a rememory - an edited memorial of the good parts of their lives for their loved ones to enjoy. He is haunted by a childhood memory that he may have been able to save another boys life but was unable to help him. At the same time he is also being pursued by people who wish to undermine the technology that stores these memories. He is editing the life of a man connected to the creation of the technology he uses and discovers he had abused his young daughter (I assume this is what we ...  Read the complete review

Not to be confused with the film of the same name, starring Jude Law and Ray Winstone). Released in 2004, I saw this movie and thought the idea sounded watchable. The premise of the film is "If history is what is written and remembered, then what happens when memories are edited and rewritten?". Directed by Lebanese Omar Naim, he's not really out there as a big Director and this has been his first major movie. Inspired by the likes of Martin Scorsese, Oliver Stone and Woody Allen, he clearly wanted to make his mark with his first release. At a relatively young age of 27 he wrote and directed The Final Cut, this being an adventurous ...  Read the complete review

note: also appears in part on Flixster and The Student Room The Final Cut is a film unfortunate enough to get a tiny release in America before going straight to DVD in the UK, a surprise given how it stars the mega famous funnyman Robin Williams, who has recently been turning in decent performances in serious fare, such as One Hour Photo and World's Greatest Dad. In line with that, The Final Cut is a crackling science fiction mystery that again proves he has what it takes in the serious arena. The film revolves around Hakman (Robin Williams). Technology is developing and I am not sure I like the usage of all technology as the Big Brother effect increases. The film "The Final Cut" starring Robin Williams in the lead role did little to comfort me. The Final Cut is set in a future where the well off can create an amazingly detailed cinematic obituary called a Remorial (sp) using the person's memory. This is done by inserting a Zoë chip into a child's head before birth. This chip is organic and grows with the person throughout their lifetime. When a person dies it is the job of a cutter to edit their memory into a pleasing film for their loved ones to remember them by. The aptly ...  Read the complete review
