Newest Review: ... Spinal Tap) plays Merle Hammond and is superb in the role. Hammond is a blood-sucking defence lawyer who will dig up any dirt ... more  ... necessary to get his clients off the hook. In this case, he makes George Saticoy out to be something he is not and is so convincing that the jury fall for it. McKean is so good in the role, smarmy, cruel and so unbelievably without conscience that I could barely stand watching him. It is a long time since a film has made me so terribly angry. What made it even worse is that this is apparently based on a true story, so presumably someone like Merle Hammond really did exist.

When Gwen Saticoy's brother George is shot dead by his business partner and long-term friend, she is devastated, but expects at least to see justice done in the courts. To her amazement, the defence lawyer in charge of the case manages to convince the jury that George, being homosexual and having AIDS, had threatened his killer with contamination - something that is very far from being the truth. The killer walks, and Gwen is forced to carry on as best she can. This is not easy, especially when she is forced to resign from her job as a teacher.
