Firefly - The Complete Series (DVD) ... April, 2004 at 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment / Features of the DVD: Box set, PAL, Widescreen / Much praised and much missed after its premature cancellation, Firefly is the first SF TV series to be conceived by Joss Whedon, creator of Buffy and cocreator of Angel. Set five centuries in the future, it is a show where the mysterious personal pasts of the crew of the tramp spaceship Serenity continually surface. In fact, it's a Western in space where the losers in a Civil War are heading out to a barren frontier. Mal Reynolds is a man embittered by the war, yet whose love of his comrades perpetually dents his cynicism--even in the 14 episodes that exist we see him warm to the bubbly young mechanic Kaylee, the preacher Book, the idealistic doctor Simon, even to the often demented River, Simon's sister, the psychic result of malign experiments. Firefly is also about adult emotional relationships, for example Kaylee's crush on Simon, the happy marriage of Mal's second officer Zoe and the pilot Wash, the disastrous erotic stalemate between Mal and the courtesan Inara. Individual episodes deal with capers going vaguely wrong, or threats narrowly circumvented; character and plot arcs were starting to emerge when the show was cancelled. Fortunately, the spin-off movie Serenity ties up some of the ends; and in the meantime, what there is of Firefly is a show to marvel at, both for its tight writing and ensemble acting, and the idiocy of the executives who cancelled it. On the DVD: Firefly on DVD is presented in anamorphic 1.78:1 with Dolby Surround Sound. It includes commentaries on six episodes by various writers, directors, designers and cast members as well as featurettes on the conception of the show and the design of the spaceship Serenity, four deleted scenes, a gag reel, and Joss Whedon singing the show's theme tune, more or less. One of the things that emerges from all of this is how committed to the project everyone involved with it was, and is--unusually, you end up caring as much for the cast and crew as for the characters.

... shoots the bad guys. You'll probably cheer as he shoots the good guys, it could go either way. You'll fret every time the loveable Kayleigh looks to be in danger, you'll roll your eyes whenever the socially inept doctor puts his foot in it. You'll laugh whenever the mercenary Jayne opens his mouth, because he will, without fail, always say something dumb. Firefly is the very best of Joss Whedon. His stuff is mostly good, a bit hit and miss, but this is pure hit. The Sino-American culture of the confederacy makes fo...more

Premium Review Firefly - The Complete Series (DVD): Firefly - A New Classic Cult TV Show (964 words)
by - written on 20/12/07 (Very useful, 107 readings)
Rating:

It is almost impossible to knowingly create a cult television show. When they made 'The Prisoner' it's unlikely that they planned for it to resonate with a chosen few for decades to come, but instead hoped it to be a mainstream success. Cult TV shows are normally created by being outside of the usual fare and are often loved passionately by a minority audience. Due to the passionate nature of fantasy and sci-fi fans it's no coincidence that many cult shows come under these genres. Another reason cult shows arise is because there a few episodes ever made. Once again due to the costly nature of making sci-fi and fantasy shows, they are often axed quickly. One of the ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review Is it a sci-fi..... Is it a Western?...No it's a bug (1697 words)

Before watching the movie Serenity, I thought it would be a good idea to watch the television series Firefly as the film was actually a continuation of that storyline. As this doesn't seem to appear on TV that often (that I've noticed at least) the only choice I really had was to buy the boxset. After a short period of searching I found it at Amazon for a very reasonable price, bought it, watched it and now I'm ready to share my thoughts on the "special edition" DVD boxset…. ---The Series--- Firefly is a little gem of a sci-fi series, direct from the brain of Buffy and Angel creator Joss Whedon. Set 500 years in the future, "the earth ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Firefly - The Complete Series (DVD): Take My Love, Take My Land, But don't take my gorram DVDs! (438 words)

I am a great big Joss Whedon fanboy. This is hardly a confession of guilt, everyone who knows me knows this. If I hear that a Joss Whedon project is in the pipeline then I get excited because his track record shows entertainment excellence that surpasses nearly all rivals. Firefly is possibly my favourite Joss Whedon show. Set in the future, the show follows the adventures of Mal Reynolds' crew of misfits and runaways in the good ship Serenity as they try to make a living, carve out a life for themselves or escape their pasts. There's Mal the anti-hero captain, Zoe the loyal second-in-command, Jayne the dim and amoral (but oddly loveable) mercenary, Kaylee ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review The fire still burns... (975 words)

The fire still burns... Bringing back cancelled TV shows seems to be a new phenomenon for American networks, Family Guy and Jericho being prime examples. While this is great for giving shows with flagging ratings a second chance, sometimes you can't help but feel this should have been instituted earlier. Firefly came at a time when pressure on the networks was huge, shows were expected to deliver ratings quickly, it wasn't until the last few years that new programs were given some breathing space to develop an audience. Firefly was the creation of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel head honcho Joss Whedon in 2002, so much was ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Firefly - The Complete Series (DVD): Fire starter (1094 words)
by - written on 01/03/09 (Very useful, 38 readings)
Rating:

"Firefly" is almost impossible to describe. In a succinct way anyway. It is a TV show from 2002 that ran for just one series before being cancelled by Fox. The same fate as other cult shows such as "Arrested Development", "Futurama" and "Family Guy". Rather than be reinstated with a second season after the massive outcry from fans, the film "Serenity" was made. "Firefly" is another genre blending TV show from Joss Whedon, creator of "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" and its spin off "Angel". The show is mainly Sci-Fi, but uses character archetypes from the Western and action genre. ...  Read the complete review
