Spaceships and cattle rustling (Firefly - The Complete Series (DVD))
Member Name: JoBennie
Advantages: A new concept brilliantly rendered Disadvantages: They pulled the series, aargh! Joss Whedon, the creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel brings his magic to a whole new world, or rather, several. Firefly is the engrossing, often heartbreaking and frequently hilarious story of the crew of Serenity, a Firefly class spaceship that works on the fringes of society trying to avoid the attention of the authorities. But there the similarity, and frequent allusions to, the Millennium Falcon end. This fronteirland is distincly western in feel, usually a genre I care very little for with its tendency to the macho and to gunfights. But Whedon does something that I can't quite, define, juxtoposing futuristic technologies and society with cattle rustling, train robberies, ragged strong spiritied clumps of communities and desperation. The characters are beautifully drawn, even the capatain, who can appear the typical tortured male lead in the vein (ahem) of Angel, has depth and range, I love the spunky mechanic and the damaged but amazing River. Highly recommended Summary: The future is not shiny and well, futuristic, it's dirty and brutal and very funny |
