Advantages: Ground breaking effects

Disadvantages: The screaming women!

For those of you who have not had the joy of the original Flash Gordon cinematic episodes and don't know what to expect, may I suggest (in a rather geeky way) that you check out season 5 of Voyager. In Series 5 Captain Janeway plays Arachnia-Queen of the Spider people...it is genius and the black and white holodeck sums up the feel of the original (and by far the best) Flash Gordon series (those of you who have witnessed the hideous 'remake' on Sci Fi Channel will know what I am talking about!)

The Flash Gordon story is well known and involves the heroics of Flash, Dale and Zarkov as they battle Ming (The Merciless) to save Earth from his hideous weapons.

There are some great things in the original series that I loved and I think they make it unique.

1) One of the first Cinema series to use huge amounts of special effects. Remember that this was a loooonnnggg time ago and some of their work was ground breaking!

2) The ships they all fly about in make the best noise for a spaceship I have ever heard

3) Each episode ends on a fantastic cliff hanger - Usually with a girl screaming!

4) It is incredibly sexist! It really shows ideals of a bygone era!

The weapons were amazing...much better than the safe platic looking phaser from the next generation of Star Trek.

The DVD collection comes in a brightly packaged box and ion an array of colours. They look great out of the box though and would recommend them on display. Even if people don't like Sci-Fi they often remember these being screened on a saturday lunchtime on BBC2!

Summary: A must see and a good talking point
