This is a classic of the superhero genre, in so much as its awful B-movie stuff, but very much like the original television series in the fact the hero is awfully wooden and the sets look like they could fall over at any moment, created in 1980, by Mike Hodges, it tells the story of All-American hero Flash Gordon (Sam Jones). Whats it ... Read the complete review

I absolutely love this film. It is one of the funniest, most overblown, badly acted movies I have ever seen but it knows it is. Director Mike Hodges knows it is. Brian Blessed, Timothy Dalton, Max Von Sydow and all the other quality actors taking part know it is, and therefore the whole thing is so much fun you can't help but get caught up in it ... I really loved this movie when I was a kid and I seen it with a discount in one shop and I decided that this one would make a nice contribution to my collection. So this really is an old movie about a fantasy superhero, well a hero from Earth Flash Gordon, which is the only one who can stop an invasion. He travels (accidentally) to ... There are some guilty pleasures that I would like to keep to myself but recently the SciFi channel have been showing quite a lot of one of my all time "I really shouldn't love this but I do" films. And that film is Flash Gordon (1980) directed by Mike Hodges (who is probably best known for directing Get Carter - the original and better ... Read the complete review

What’s it about? --------------------- Flash Gordon, Dale Arden and Dr Hans Zarkov set off in a spaceship to find out who or what is attacking Earth. Who’s in it? --------------- Most of the cast is, frankly, appalling; the standard of acting somewhere just above the level you would expect of an amateur dramatics ... Read the complete review

Earth is experiencing freak destructive weather worldwide, including flaming hail!. Only one man, Dr Hans Zarkov, (formally at Nasa) has provided any explaination! The planet is under attack from Ming the Mercillous, who tours the universe in his hidden realm, searching for signs of intelligent species that could pose a threat to his order!. ... FLASH GORDON "Flash - a-ah - saviour of the universe. Flash - a-ah - he'll save every one of us." Or so the Queen soundtrack goes over the comic-book enriched title credits (something Spiderman 2 would later borrow). It serves to get the audience's toes immediately tapping in anticipation for the film to begin ... Read the complete review

Ah, my favourite film. The greatest film ever made, in fact. Flash Gordon was released in 1980, one if a bunch of films around that time designed to cash in on Star Wars. But while the likes of Battlestar Galactica and The Black Hole are tedious, Flash is a masterpiece (it was intended to be the first of a trilogy, although tragically ... Read the complete review

Flash Gordon, being very much alive, is more than a superhero. The fact that he survived for more than one issue of a magazine can be seen as a great achievement in itself. Flash Gordon runs fast! That's what he does, he runs fast. Faster than a speeding bullet, he'd outrun Superman anyday. And that's his special powers, ... Read the complete review

Flash Gordon is probably one of the best known action comic heroes to make an early appearence on the silver screen. An American Football player who accidentally finds himself having to save earth and face off against the evil Ming the Merciless, Flash soon becomes a hero and gets called up for many more adventures. This film ... Read the complete review

Obviously there were going to be loads of science fiction movies released in the wake of Star Wars. Obviously they were all going to be terrible. All of them? Well, no, perhaps not quite... Flash Gordon is beyond a shadow of a doubt my favourite film of all time. I used to be ashamed of this, what with having done some film studies ... Read the complete review

Flash Gordon - just like the traditional stories, is a top American Football player transported to Mongo by the nutty Dr Hans Zarkov, along with Dale Arden, the three of them attempt to save the Earth before the moon crashes into it. This of course was planned to be a massive blockbuster movie - with its array of stars, featuring Topol, ... Read the complete review

That was one of the line’s most quoted from this movie in our house when I was 7 years old, and believe you me, this movie was watched until the tape broke, and we had to buy yet another copy. Flash Gordon is probably my favourite fictional character of all time. Created as a comic strip in the 1930s by Alex Raymond, the most famous incarnation of the character (and my favourite version) was the movie serials of the 1930s starring Larry "Buster" Crabbe. Three of these serials were made (now available on DVD), and this movie ... Read the complete review

I have watched this film 100 times. It was interesting to see it again on DVD. It is still a FUN movie. The tone of the film is campy and adventurous. I think it captures the fun of the old serials very well -- i.e. Flash seems doomed, only to escape to another tight squeeze! The production design on FLASH GORDON is colorful and bold. ... If you haven't seen this, why not? It's a quintessential sci fi film, which is amazingly cheesy in places (for example, the american football eque escape attempt). It's also got one of teh best incidental soundtracks on any film, with Queen filling in the gaps in the story, and setting the pace towards the end of the film. ... Read the complete review

It’s unrealistic, it’s corny, it’s over the top, but my God it’s good. It’s based on the 30’s comic strip and it certainly has a cartoony feel and is almost spooflike.
