At a recent girls night in, we got stuck into the chick-flicks we've always meant to watch, but haven't actually got round to, and one of these was 'Flashdance'. The film follows an 18-year old girl called Alex Owens (played by Jennifer Beals), who dreams of becoming a professional dancer at the city's repertoire. Unfortunately, like many people, she is afraid to go for her dream and so in the meantime she works as a welder during the day and as an exotic dancer at night while she builds up the courage to sign up for an audition. This was the dance film for aspiring dancers or people who love dancing in the 80s. Released in 1983, the film had several Oscar nominations and won an Oscar for best music, Flashdance sang by Irene Cara. The story is simple. I had always loved this movie through my late teens and the other day there it was staring me in the face on my DVD shelf so I popped it in my DVD player turned the TV on and was sooo disappointed. I had completely forgotten how little substance there was to the film itself. The whole idea of the film is Alex Owens (Jennifer Beals) is our heroine. A steel worker by day and exotic dancer by night. Her dream is to get into a real dance company and be a ballet dancer. With encouragement from her boss/boyfriend, she may get her chance. Flashdance DVD Special Edition.. I love this film. Such a feel good factor makes you want to dance around the room to the music. If you watch it once you will want to watch it again and again. An ideal present for christmas for any fan of Flashdance. Get the girls round with wine for a night and and you will all be singing and dancing along by the end of the film. Jennifer Beals is a fantastic dancer and if you liked Dirty Dancing you would also like this film. It is quite an old film now made 25 years ago back in 1983 but every woman would still be able to relate to it.
