Flawless [2008] (DVD) ... Constantine Gregory, David Henry / It would be overpraise to propose that Flawless reviews itself with its title, but... how about "supremely decorous"? It is, at any rate, a film that merits a grateful salute from audiences weary of being beaten about the head and shoulders in pursuit of an engrossing caper movie. A plot to make off with a fortune in gems from England's premier diamond company unfolds without explosions, vrooming vehicles, or rapid-fire shootouts. It's like a feature-length variation on those sly, soft-spoken Alfred Hitchcock Presents episodes of the '50s, with the patient accumulation of mood, detail and character leading to wry twists and satisfying revelations. We are in 1960 and a London not yet disposed to swing. Laura Quinn (Demi Moore), the lone female officer of London Diamond Corporation, is smarter and more capable than her male colleagues, but that doesn't deter the company from promoting them over her while profiting from her talents. This has long since gotten old, so when Mr. Hobbs (Michael Caine), the mild-mannered night janitor, enlists her in a scheme to fill his thermos with two million pounds' worth of diamonds from the vault, she listens. Suffice it to say that the vault is penetrated according to plan--and then the real tension sets in. Things are not what they seem, even to those supposedly in the know (us, for instance), and distrust springs up between the conspirators as they find themselves under close scrutiny by a steely investigator (Lambert Wilson). All this is intelligently scripted by Edward A. Anderson (a maiden effort) and directed by Michael Radford with a crisp, unostentatious eye; the cold interiors of the Lon Di headquarters, generically oppressive on first sight, take on a nuanced familiarity as the place where, for the most part, Laura Quinn spends her life. Demi Moore--scarlet lips in a black-and-grey world--admirably catches Laura's not-quite-smothered ambition and frustration without breaking her cover, as it were. Michael Caine couldn't be better as Hobbs, an invisible man in plain sight (how many viewers fail to notice his first appearance in the film?); he's the master of his trade, but you knew that. There's a framing story, set more or less in the present, which seems to be an obligatory bow to feminism but sets up a tease or two of its own, then adds yet another twist to the proceedings. --Richard T. This is a bit at odds with the tale that then unfolds which has Moore in 1960 at a senior position with the London Diamond Company which controls a great proportion of the world's diamond trade, but she is repeatedly passed over for promotion despite her intelligence and dedication. As she never makes MD I wonder why the reporter thought she was so successful that she needed interviewing 40 years on? Michael Caine plays the cleaner in London Diamond...more

Premium Review Flawless [2008] (DVD): No gimmicks, a great plot, and great actors (461 words)

I saw this film a few weeks ago after receiving it through the post from lovefilm, and I was eager to get it on and watched as it looked like a great film, something a little different without the need for gimmicks. It was just that and it didn't disappoint one bit. I have since read somewhere that this film was based on a true story, but after a little digging I am 99% sure that this isn't the case. The thing that I liked about this film was that it was set in the late 1950s and early 60s, and while providing you with a great plot of a diamond heist, it also dared to be different and address a major problem of the time, which was women in the workplace. Demi ...  Read the complete review

I don't think I've ever seen a bad Michael Caine film, and that is the reason why I picked up this film from blockbusters. We sat down to watch this film not knowing what to expect, from the first time we saw Demi Moore heavily covered in make up as she's supposed to be playing an old woman we were thinking this film was going to be pretty crap, as she opened up her mouth and showed her perfect dentures, it looked pretty much ridiculous. The film however quickly picked up... ====== The Plot ====== Demi Moore plays Laura Quinn a woman who works in a male dominated workplace that deals with diamonds, called The London Diamond Company or ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Flawless [2008] (DVD): Diamonds Are A Girls Best Friend (792 words)

Before I start my review for the new Demi Moore and Michael Caine movie, I need to clear something up. Flawless is not a true story or even based on a true story; it is a complete work of fiction despite what numerous magazines and online movie review sites state. It's something that has grown to annoy me more and more over the past months, especially when the story revolves around what would be the biggest theft in living history. The basis of Michael Radford's new film is sexism in the workplace during the 1950's and 1960's; and the comparisons to our current climb, I guess the actual crime itself is a secondary factor to this. Certainly at the offset Demi ...  Read the complete review

Another reviewer of this film says they have never seen a bad Michael Caine film; well I'm assuming they haven't seen Blame It on Rio, which coincidentally stars Demi Moore and was truly bad. But as Flawless is the story of a diamond heist I thought it sounded interesting. The film opens with a barely recognisable Demi Moore made up to look like an old lady (albeit with a rather silky bob haircut) meeting up with a young female reporter who is interviewing the trailblazing women of the 60s who achieved great things in their careers at a time when women were presumably confined to their kitchens. This is a bit at odds with the tale that then unfolds which has ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Flawless [2008] (DVD): Not quite flawless (274 words)

Flawless is a mystery hiest movie directed by Micheal Radford. Starring Micheal Caine as hobbs and Demi More as laura Quinn who works for a diamond company. The story is set in the 60's and follows laura in her job, underapreciated and a hard worker she gets involved a a plan to steal some diamonds with The janitor (hobbs) Who also has another agenda. Angry at her bosses laura joins Hobbs in trying to steal from her employers but is unaware of Hobbs true motives. The film is pretty by the numbers and the heist isnt the best on film. Micheal Caine stands out and saves the film from being run of the mill. His character has another agenda ...  Read the complete review
