Advantages: Very funny

Disadvantages: None

Given that he is a genuinely funny man, 'Fletch' is one of Chevy Chase very few great movies, an adaptation of Gregory McDonald's superb mystery thrillers. It's not a stretch for Chevy - he plays a smartass reporter with dreams of being a basketball star who gets mixed up in a drug smuggling conspiracy.

The humour comes from Chase's consistently smart one-liners, his penchant for disguises (and accompanying use of daft names) and the mocking tone of his voiceover. The mystery is OK, although you'd probably guess what's going on pretty quick. With a soundtrack by the quintessentially eighties musician Harold Faltermeyer and very deft direction from the underrated Michael Ritchie, it's perhaps the best vehicle for Chase's witty. rather louche style.

The sequel is, however, absolutely dire.
