Footloose (DVD) ... 07 October, 2002 at Paramount Home Entertainment / Features of the DVD: PAL / First released in 1984, Footloose now enjoys the same sort of semi-ironic nostalgic cachet as John Hughes' contemporary schlock-fests about angst-ridden teens with silly hair. This is partly due to the fact that, as breathtakingly predictable kids-against-the-squares romps go, it's really pretty tolerable, but it's mostly because of the soundtrack. The songs that appear in the film--notably Kenny Loggins' infectiously vapid title track, and gale-force screecher Bonnie Tyler's excruciating "Holding Out for a Hero"--are possessed of an awfulness so monolithic that they have transcended their era and become reliable floor-fillers at 80s nostalgia discos all over the western world. The plot, such as it is, sees the eerily androidal Kevin Bacon playing a hip rock & roll youth from the big city rebelling against the strictures of the conservative small town in which he finds himself living. Inevitably, he falls for the daughter of his nemesis, the local preacher (the latter, it has to be said, is played with some aplomb by John Lithgow, who very nearly wrings depth from a character otherwise straight out of the colour-by-numbers guide to movie-making). Inevitably, there are some dance sequences. Inevitably, the kids win out, and the grown-ups realise that maybe they aren't so bad after all. On the DVD: Footloose can be watched on disc, should you so desire, dubbed in German, Spanish, French or Italian. There also subtitles available in pretty well every European language, as well as Arabic, Hebrew, Russian and Turkish. Other than that there are no extras. --Andrew Mueller

Premium Review Footloose (DVD): The Original High School Musical! (1314 words)

Before I write this review I would just like to say I'm not gay. The rumor that Kevin Bacon might be gay started when he stared in this, so any adulation for this cult 80s finger-snapping, toe-tapping classic must surely be bad for my machissimo. Bacons impressive dancing skills (and not the obvious fact he had genuine chemistry with female lead in Lori Singer on screen) seemed to define his sexuality from there on in, effectively typecasting him to seedy pervert types from there on in. Then again you never see him out on Tinsletown with a 'hotty' on his arm in the gossip magazines, the usual theatre to steer the rumors the other way. Anyhow, I can't dance, so that's the ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review Footloose (DVD): Kick off your Sunday Shoes (747 words)

Footloose is one of those films I've been meaning to see for quite some time but just never got round to doing so. I've heard most of the songs and amazingly know quite a lot of the words to them but for some strange reason that has often escaped me I have never actually seen the film - that is of course until last week. With some HMV vouchers I had earned from a survey site I am a member of I decided that it was high time I actually bought and watched Footloose and so that's exactly what I did and it arrived on my doorstep early last week. I eventually got around to watching it two nights ago and thoroughly enjoyed it from beginning to end. ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review All he wanted to do was dance...and now so do I. (655 words)

Footloose is a musical/ drama film that was released in 1894. It is rated 15 due to some mild language, a little violence, drug references and some moderate references to sex and is 103 minutes long. Footloose is very loosly based on events that took place in a small rural community in Oklahoma. Plot Ren and his family move to a small town that isn't anything close to what he is used to. Ren loves to have a good time by going out, dancing and generally just doing what teenagers do but unfortunately dancing and popular music has been banned in his new town. Ren soon makes friends and realises that all of the local teenagers are longing to have some fun ...  Read the complete review

Finding myself with an evening alone to watch my choice of film on the TV, I browsed through the shelf and saw Footloose, still in it’s cellophane and decided it was high time I reminisced to this fantastic feel good film. Ren McCormack and his mum move to small town Beaumont from the city, only to discover that rock and roll music and dancing are banned following an accident five years previously, when a teenage boy dies after a drink fuelled car stunt goes wrong. The town is lead by the seemingly severe yet kind, Reverend Shaw Moore who backs the town’s outrageous rules against teenage good times. Being the father of a rebellious daughter, Ariel, ...  Read the complete review
