Advantages: Robbie the Robot, Groundbreaking, Unique

Disadvantages: none

The Forbidden Planet, is not only one of Leslie Nielsons first features it is one of the first soundtracks to have a fully synthesised sound-score. Famous for introducing Robbie the Robot(Lost in Space) but challenging for its time as it was diferent to other sci-fi of this period. 50's sci-fi was obsessed with mutant insects and mind control which was compared to America's anxieties of nuclear tests and Red attack.
This text however is more concerned with the self-unknown. A professor, the remaining survivor of a crew that was wiped out by a mysterious alien force, is stranded, quite comfortably on a planet. A passing Earth-ship arrives to take the prof home but whilst there the mysterious alien force returns and attacks the crew. Did I forget to mention the professor's beautiful virgin daughter...a sex-starved male crew, see where this is going?
The professor during his stay has discovered some alien technologies which has boosted his IQ, giving him a slight superiority complex, this information he wants to keep to himself.
This film proves more psychologically astute than its brothers and sisters of the same time, if you love your b-movies, this is one of the cream of the era, the special effects are'nt too bad, the cheesey dialogue will keep you grinning and it's in colour too. If this sounds like your cup'a'brew then why not check out Invaders from Mars or The Day the Earth Stood Still.
