Advantages: The leads are good actors, a good idea for a film
Disadvantages: Lack of laughs and chemistry
Big fan of both the lead actors so this was on my list to see. A good Christmas romantic comedy - can't go wrong right? Well - it's OK. Its not Sweet Home Alabama and its not Wedding Crashers. But it's worth watching when it comes in TV.
Brad (Vince Vaughn) and Kate (Reese Witherspoon) are a couple in love, but who are totally not bothered about getting married. They enjoy the no ties and no responsbilities of just being being a couple without kids. They can go on holiday whenever they please and don't have to commit to anything. They always go away at Christmas (after telling their families they are doing charity work) but this year, they get to the airport and discover chaos - all flights are cancelled and their holiday is Fiji is not going to happen. They both end up on the news and their families see them and insist they spend Christmas with them. As both their parents are divorced they end up making 4 separate visits to the 4 different sets of parents. Just what they wanted at Christmas!! They end up finding out a lot of things about each other, and perhaps a life of no ties and no family is not what either of them really wants after all?
If you've seen the trailer you'll know there are some very funny physical comedy moments. Vince Vaughn does his usual speedy talking which is funny in itself and Reese Witherspoon puts in her usual solid performance. But I wasn't really feeling them as a couple. In the Break Up you can actually feel the spark between Vaughn and Jennifer Aniston's characters but here, there isn't really much chemistry. A lot of laughs, granted, but not a lot of love. The fact the Reese is tiny and Vince is a bit of a giant also looks a bit odd! Yes Vince is always taller than his co stars (he's huge!) but it seems more obvious in this film. The DVD cover has Reese standing on a box so you can't really tell, but in the film it looks a little odd!
Its only 90 minutes long, so it speeds along and doesn't drag and is an OK little film if you're in one night and want a few laughs. But it definitely isn't one of the better romantic comedies out there - as much as I love both the leads in this!! Its just seems a bit stale and dated.
Summary: An OK film with a few laughs but nothing side splitting!
