Anyone mistaken for thinking that Pam Grier shot to fame starring in Tarantino's Jackie Brown would be wrong - dead wrong. The only reason that Grier was picked (or the character Jackie was created) was due to her role in Jack Hill's Seminal blaxploitation flick - Foxy Brown. The title of Tarantino's film is a play on the names of director Jack Hill and Pam's surname in Foxy Brown. The advertising slogan for this film reads ' she's brown sugar and spice and if you don't treat her nice she'll put you on ice!' This campy, very 70s slogan quite neatly sums up the film and the era. Pam Grier really cornered the market for lead female roles in the 1970s Blaxpoitation era, and he she is as sexy as ever, playing a woman hell bent on revenge after the death of her lover. However, Foxy Brown is much more wooden and much less sexy than Coffy (also starring Pam Grier) and it really does feel like a TV movie or a black episode of the A-Team nowadays. Even so, Foxy Brown is quite funky and is an enjoyable timekiller for ninety minutes, and it is clear that this movie is the inspiration for Tarantino's Jackie Brown, which also starred Grier. ...
