Advantages: Anthony Hopkins's grin and Ryan Goslings butt
Disadvantages: Not very good
I decided tonight to watch yet another film my mate sent me through the post. He has a habit of forgetting I'm a romantic comedy sucker and occasionally sends me films that are just not me! They get hidden away in a drawer till I'm all out of other stuff to watch and I think ok I'll give it a go. Usually these films surprise me and are great, sometimes (like this one) they leave me perplexed!
The Plot....
Theodore Crawford, Ted (Anthony Hopkins) is a successful structural engineer married to a beautiful, younger looking unfaithful wife, Jennifer (Embeth davidtz) who's actually been having it off with someone to do with what the integral plot of this film. Yes Ted finds out and he shoots her in the head. His acting at this point, chatting to his wife to me was the most interesting part. He comes across very clever smart and you can understand why she'd have an affair lol
Anyhow puts her in a coma, and confesses to the arresting officer Nunnally (Billy Burke) that yes he did do it. It appears an open and shut case for the DA's office, so Beechum (Ryan Gosling) agrees to take it as his final assignment before leaving for a prestigious job with a corporate law firm.
However when it's revealed Nunnally was the one having an affair with Crawford's wife, Beechum realizes Crawford has set him up therefore putting his whole career in jeopardy. The film turns into a bit of a courtroom drama when Ted defends himself and enjoys himself immensely!
My take on it....
The film is slightly reminiscent of Silence of the lambs. When Anthony Hopkins bows his head and says "I'm afraid your going to have to" in reply too Beechums statement of "I'm not going to play games with you" it sent an excited chill down my spine!
The relationship of Ted and Beechum reminded me of Hannibal lecter and Clarice. The music throughout is chilling but I kept losing interest. It lacked a lot and got caught up in to much jargon. There's no doubting that Anthony Hopkins was brilliant and that Ryan Gosling is gorgeous, the acting throughout was well executed but I got lost and disconnected and by the end I didn't care the reasons behind the attempted murder and to be quite frank I'm not clear of the ending but I'm not inclined to re watch it. I wanted to see passion of any kind and it severely lacked that.
Fracture has no bone in it. There were so many holes in the plot it was like one of my mums crochet doilies she loves so much.
I've seen a few reviews for this film and its got good ratings, it may just be me! If i was you though I'd rent it , rather than buy it as no matter what I doubt very much it's be a film you'd want to watch over and over again anyway lol
