Fracture is a 2007 Legal / Suspense film starring Anthony Hopkins and Ryan Gosling

-----------------

The Plot :

"Ted" Crawford ( Anthony Hopkins ) is a wealthy and very talented structural engineer, who over time discovers his wife is having an affair with Police Detective Rob Nunally ( Billy Burke ).

Crawford crafts a plot which culminates in him shooting his wife in their home, seriously wounding her, Nunally arrives on the scene and Crawford confesses to him, however he retracts his confession at his arraignment.

Meanwhile Rising star deputy district attorney Willy Beachum ( Ryan Gosling ) is assigned to the case and initially considers this an open and shut manner and agrees to go to trial, all the while Beachum is busy making arrangements for his transition from Criminal Law, to the more lucrative Corporate law with a prestigious law firm.

And so a battle of wits begins between Beachum and Crawford which threatens to jeopardise Willy's new career and potentially allow a guilty man to walk free !!

----------------------

So there you have it, a pretty by the numbers thriller that has the stakes raised only due to the good on screen chemistry between Anthony Hopkins and Ryan Gosling.

Gosling is excellent as the cocky and over confident DA, and Hopkins is his usual menacing self when playing a villain ( although not quite hannibal lecter material ), although Hopkins is inexplicably portrayed as what seems to be a scotsman when he's Welsh, surely portraying a welshman would have been just as useful as his origins are never explored in the movie itself.

This one passed me by at the movies and ended up being something me and the wife picked up on DVD and watched. it did a good job of passing almost 2 hours of time but not once did I ever think I would be adding this to my collection.

A by the numbers thriller with some nice plot twists, but don't expect anything ground breaking here.

Summary: Gets lost in the sea of average thrillers out there
