Frankenstein, made by Universal in 1931, is probably the most famous horror film of all time. A very loose adaptation of Mary Shelley’s novel, it gave us one of the most recognisable icons of cinema in Boris Karloff’s monster – a huge, hulking brute with big shoes, a flat head and bolts through his neck. It was enormously popular at the time and, along with Dracula the same year, sparked off a horror boom which produced some of the best known and most enduringly popular films of the 30s.
