Advantages: a good laugh
Disadvantages: Not really any new material, might be too offensive for some
I was lucky enough to go and see Frankie Boyle at the NEC in Birmingham the year before last. Sadly, I took my sister and my partner has not had the joy of seeing a live Frankie Boyle show. Seeing as my partner quite likes Frankie's humour I decided to buy this DVD for his birthday.
Frankie Boyle is A Scottish comedian and writer who you may or may not have seen on TV shows such as Mock The Week and Have I Got News For You. He is known for his dark, pessimistic and often controversial sense of humour.
My partner has in the past likened Frankie Boyle to Marmite; you either love him or hate him.
Release date: Nov 2008
Number of disks: 1
Run time: 3 hours
Shot at: The Hackney Empire, London
This DVD can be found for sale on Amazon for £10 with free super saver delivery or £3.28 with £1.26 postage is a cheaper alternative from an Amazon trader. Asda currently sell it for around £8.
Littlewoods no longer stock it but I had bought it from there for £12.99 using some rewards I had.
This DVD is fairly easy to find even though it's been around for a good few years now. The price does vary a bit from place to place, Amazon is the cheapest I've seen and that is a good price for this DVD that I am happy to pay, over £10 in some places is a bit much though.
The DVD comes in a standard DVD case.
On the back of the case is the typical blurb encouraging you to buy the DVD, the DVD information, a bar code and some screen shots taken from the DVD.
On the front of the case are the words Frankie Boyle in bold black writing and then live written in a thin, pink font. There is a quote from The Independent which reads "Stiletto-sharp regular on Mock The Week...even more electric live". There is a picture of Frankie taken from an "emo" angle (taken from slightly above and to the front, so his head and shoulders are larger than his legs and feet). In the picture he is wearing a bright pink suit and peeking over the top of his black framed glasses. The background for the case is white.
The DVD came with the usual cellophane packaging around the case.
The packaging is quite eye catching due to the pink suit and bold black writing on a white background. I like it as it is simple yet effective.
Watching Frankie Boyle Live
When watching the DVD the first thing I noticed was that Frankie wears a grey pin stripe suit rather than the stunning pink number from the front of the case. Personally, I would have rather seen him in pink but the grey probably fits his dark humour better.
Although this DVD is not the same show I saw live I did recognise a few lines from the show I saw. I also had heard a few of the jokes before on various TV shows that Frankie Boyle had appeared on. Whilst it would have been nicer to hear all new material, this DVD has been out since 2008 and so I did expect for it to not all be new to my ears.
There is plenty going on in this live set, Frankie speaks to the audience (well rather, picks on them), addresses recent news topics (ID cards and asbo's stick in my head the most, though this is old news now) and show cases his usual cynical humour. Many of the jokes have a bit of shock value and some people may find them offensive but I love the way he mocks things that other people wouldn't dare to.
There are some extras on this DVD, they're not too bad but I didn't really rate them too highly especially compared to the main DVD.
There is a 23 minute tour film which is entertaining to watch but badly shot. Then there is Rush Hour Sketches which is 8 minutes taken from a BBC3 series which Frankie had a part in. Lastly there is Drug Experiment where Frankie and some other comedians get together on herbal highs and have a discussion.
Overall I enjoyed this DVD (as did my partner) and was happy with the price I paid. I would have loved to give this 5 stars but I feel that as some of the jokes used will already have been on TV and Frankie Boyle is not everyone's cup of tea then 4 stars if more appropriate.
Summary: An amusing DVD, but you may well have heard most of the jokes already.
