Advantages: Hilarious as usual
Disadvantages: None
The second series of the amazing sitcom 'Friends' returns with another 24 episodes chronicalling the lives and loves of the six best mates in Manhattan.
I have heard various people say that this is the best series of the show, and although I'm not sure I would go that far, it certainly is one of my favourites and contains some unforgettable episodes.
After series 1 closed with Rachel realising her feelings for Ross at last, series 2 opens with the arrival of Ross' new girlfriend, which is obviously the last thing Rachel wants! This allows the 'will they, won't they' question to hang on for a bit longer, though thankfully it is resolved during this series (I won't say whether it turns out one way or another, just in case there's someone out there who hasn't seen it yet!).
Other storylines in this series include Joey's new job on 'Days of Our Lives' and his resulting fame, which causes friction in his friendship with Chandler. Chandler gets a new (certifiably crazy!) flatmate who refuses to leave, Monica starts dating an older man (played by Tom Selleck), Ross' ex-wife gets married to her girlfriend, and Phoebe records a video for her iconic and bizarre song 'Smelly Cat'.
It is worth noting that this series contains one of the best and most memorable episodes, 'The One with the Prom Video'. This is the first of many Friends flashback episodes which is both hilarious for its portrayal of the way Rachel, Monica and Ross used to look and act (check out Rachel's nose and Monica's references to her 'flower'!) and also touching, as it shows how far back Ross' affection for Rachel stretches. It is a stand-out episode in Friends' history and is not to be missed.
As usual there is an array of guest stars including Julia Roberts and Jean Claude Van Damme, but thankfully these stars are not too self conscious and normally their appearances fit neatly into the storylines.
The acting of all 6 main cast members is as strong as, if not stronger than, the first season, and there are so many brilliantly funny moments and also very sweet bits that it is impossible to reference them all.
Needless to say, this is an essential purchase for any Friends fan. Although you can always catch random episodes on E4, I think it's best to have the DVD so that you can see them in the right order. Currently series 2 is selling for just £6.99 on Play.com, so how can you resist?
Summary: Another great set for your DVD library
