Advantages: Great acting and writing as usual, beautiful finale
Disadvantages: Elle MacPherson is a little irritating
After the excellent fifth season of Friends, you could be forgiven for thinking that series 6 would struggle to compete, but fortunately this season is as brilliantly funny and touching as the ones that have gone before it.
It begins with the gang having to deal with the repercussions of their actions in Las Vegas. Ross and Rachel decide to annul their marriage, but of course that doesn't go smoothly. And Chandler and Monica decide to move in together, which means Rachel must go and live with Phoebe, which changes the dynamic of the show slightly and allows for new and funny situations to develop (The One with the Apothecary Table, where Rachel tries to convince Phoebe the new furniture she is buying for the flat is all vintage items from a flea market when in fact it is all from Pottery Barn is a hilarious example of this). In addition to this, Ross starts dating again and Joey gets a new roommate in the form of Elle MacPherson.
As well as these overarching storylines, there are lots of amusingly surreal single stories in various episodes, most notably perhaps the ones featuring Joey's imaginary Porsche, Ross' attempts to teach Unagi to Rachel and Phoebe, and Monica's anger that Chandler cannot cry.
One negative about this series is that the use of famous guest stars is back. I found both Elle MacPherson as Joey's roommate and lust object, and Bruce Willis as the father of a girl Ross is dating, quite annoying. They are famous enough to take you out of the story and the show becomes less believable with them in it (though Willis is better than MacPherson).
However I can forgive that, especially given the tear-jerking, beautiful last episode (which is as usual a feature length one or two-parter). Although it had me shouting at the screen during some of it, it is really lovely and a great way to end another good series of the sitcom.
Series 6 of Friends can be purchased for £8.98 from Amazon.co.uk.
Summary: Another essential Friends purchase

- 21/01/09 I liked Bruce Willis ("You got it Paul....you still got it") but I agree Elle MacPherson was pants. |
