Advantages: Great for pet owners, fun movie

Disadvantages: None

Garfiled - The large orange cat!

Garfield began life as a comic strip by Jim Davis which poked fun at pet owners and their relationships with their cats. On 19th June (Garfield's birthday) 2008 the comic strip will have been running for 30 years.

Garfield lives with his downtrodden owner, Jon Arbuckle and the dreaded dog Odie.

In 2004 Twentieth Century Fox brought out Garfield: The Movie. The film includes real actors and a computer generated version of Garfield the cat so this is not a cartoon. Garfield is voiced by the brilliant comedic actor Bill Murray who's dry sense of humour and deep voice brings a very real feel to the character of Garfield that we have all grown up with and love.

The basic story of the movie is this: Garfield is enjoying his very comfy lifestyle of eating lasagne, lounging around the house, making fun of Jon's (played by Breckin Myer) attempts to date and watching tv without a care in the world. Then Jon falls in love with Garfield's very beautiful vet Liz (played brilliantly by Jennifer Love Hewitt) and she convinces him to adopt the dog - Odie. Garfield and Odie butt heads, very funnily, but when Odie is kidnapped it is up to Garfield to save the day.

The thing I most loved about this movie was the fact that it must have been written or had some influence over by cat owners. I have a cat myself and I lost count of the nubmer of times that Garfield would do something and I would think, my cat does just the same!! The way it would stretch, or jump up and eat Jon's food just as he turned away were just some of the funny things. It totally made my enjoyment of the film a lot greater than if I didn't have a cat but I'm sure most people would love it either way.

This is obviously a film for kids but I watched it as an adult and enjoyed it immensly. The film is rated U for Universal - suitable for all with very mild language and slapstick violence. It runs for approximately 76 minutes.

The hilarious bonus features include:

Interactive Games
Deleted scenes (brilliant!)
Director's commentary
Featurette
Multi-Angle content

If you liked this movie there was a sequel released in 2006 called Garfield: A tale of two kitties. Basically a Garfield version of a tale of two cities where Garfield goes to England. I liked it but not as much as this original DVD.

You can now buy this movie in HMV for £4.99.

If you love cats, dogs and funny kids movies then this is definitely for you.

Summary: If you grew up loving Garfield the comic strip and love cats then you will love this movie
