Does your DNA determine your fate?
Gattaca is a film set in a world where humans are classified by their genetic superiority. There are two groups of people in the world of Gattaca, those conceived by natural means and those who are born using biometrics; they are genetically engineered to possess the best hereditary traits of their parents.
Vincent was conceived without the aid of genetic technology aid, he suffer from short sightedness and have a heart disorder probability of 99%, which means, he has a life expectancy of 30.2 years. He was discriminated as a result and is classified as "in valid", his dream of becoming an astronaut was destroyed.
As an "in valid", it is also assumed that he is more susceptible to diseases and hence could only do menial job like cleaning. Vincent met a Jerome Morrow, a former swimming star of superior genetic profile. Jerome attempt suicide after failing to win gold medal in a high profile swimming competition but ended paralyzing himself from waist down. As the incident happen outside the country, there was no record about his disability. Vincent and Jerome make a deal. Vincent became a "borrowed ladder", a term used to described an "in valid" committing the criminal act of fraud and a heretic against genetic determinism.
Every day, Vincent have to scrub his skin so that few will fall off at Gattaca, his work place, carry Jerome DNA blood, tissue and urine samples for any genetic test. A murder in his workplace threatened to uncover his true identity especially when his eyelash was found near the murder scene and was tested to be an "in valid".
Gattaca reveal the reality of such genetic technology that is presently understudied. It shows how human being can be modified to excel like for example, a pianist with 6 fingers. Can genetically engineered people ruled the world or will true human spirit and gut prevail?
The main casts of Gattaca are Ethan Hawke as Vincent, Jude Law as Jerome and Uma Thurman as Irene, Vincent love interest. This film is written and directed by Andrew Niccol and the film run time is 106 min.
I like the storyline to this film. Though it is futuristic, there is a high possibility that it could happen. There isn't much chemistry between Ethan Hawke and Jude Law, I didn't understand their relationship till I watch it again. Perhaps, they need to act stiffly as engineered human.
Anyhow, the story line overshadows the cast which is good in this case. Overall an intriguing film to watch.
Summary: A futuristic story that can become a reality.
