Advantages: Great writing, funny
Disadvantages: annoying imaginary sequences, weak lead in Alison
Get Over It
Get Over It was released in 2001 and can be gernealised as a romantic comedy. It is based around Shakesphere's play A Midsummer Nights Dream, yet takes a modern approach to this and relates it to Modern America.
As a huge fan of Kirsten Dunst (previously of Bring It On Fame), I was very much looking forward to this film. It is quite a generic american film yet the concept of Shakesphere's play and how it relates makes this film for me stand out.
The Plot
The story at the beginning is based around high school couple Alison (Melissa Sagemiller) and Berke (Ben Foster),a popular high school couple. They break up at the start of this film as Alison falls for popular new student Striker (Shane West.) What follows is the humourous use of Shakersphere's A Midsummer Nights Dream as Berke attempts to win Alison back with the help of his friends Felix (Colin Hanks) and Dennis (Sisqo) and also with the help of Felix's little sister Kelly (Kirsten Dunst.) In an attempt to win Alison back, Berke auditions for the upcoming school musical 'A Midsummer Nights Rockin Eve' in which new lovers Alison and Striker play the leads. However, slight glitch does Felix's little sister Kelly like Berke and what does her feel about her? I won't spoil it for you.
My Opinion
From the offset this film caught my interest as immediately Berke and Alison broke up leaving the viewer wondering what will happen. The use of Shakesphere's Midsummer Nights Dream in this film is well written as it relates to the play whilst putting a modern spin on things. I felt the acting is this film was quite strong with Ben Foster (Berke) and Kirsten Dunst (Kelly) providing humourous moments throughout. I felt that i didn't particularily warm to Mellisa SageMiller (Alison's) acting and felt her performance as one of the film's leads was weak and wooden. Shane West playiung Striker pulled of the role of the "enemy" well as i didn't like him throughout. Overall the cast were strong, the scriptwriting also i found quite strong as there was a mixture of humour and seriousness. On a negative note however, i didnt like watching the sequences where Berke was thinking and the scene switched to them being in a forest. This happened every so often and i just had to fast forward through it as i found it quite annoying. Overall, i feel the film is wells tructured though has quite a obvious ending however considering the type of film this is, it is only to be expected. Worth a watch!
Summary: Very Good Teen Comedy.
