Advantages: martin short - superb as Dr Oates, Kirsten dunst - sexy
Disadvantages: predictable, formulaic
Teen Romantic comedies – seen one and you’ve seen them all. With just a few exceptions. But despite saying that, this is a worthy effort. It has several plus points – some of them are on the chests of Kirsten Dunst and Melissa Sagemiller, the ‘hot babes’ referred to in my title. Dunst is really sweet AND Sexy as ‘Kelly’, the little sister of ‘Felix’ (Colin Hanks) who helps get his best friend ‘Berke’ (yes, REALLY! – played by Ben Foster) over ‘Allison’ (Sagemiller) who has just dumped him. No honest, it is not as complicated as I make it sound. It’s is a formulaic teen comedy in the mould of many others – but it is very watchable, cheesy but fun. The big problem with all these types of movies is that there are only so many permutations – boy meets girl – boys falls for girl – boy dumps or gets dumped by girl – boy shacks up with ex-Girl’s best friend – best friend is a lesbian – brother is a one legged dwarf from Monterey – Uncle is in an asylum – Father has run off with …..sorry getting carried away, but you know what I mean. Despite pretty well knowing what is going to happen (much like in a James Bond film – you KNOW he will not die and saves the world from evil madman AGAIN), you can just sit back and enjoy this film. The basic plot is like I said. The hero – Berke – is dumped by Allison and gradually realises that the right girl for him has been there all along in the shape (very nice too) of his best friend’s little sister Kelly. There are some nicely done fantasy scenes and some unexpected moments too. One of the sad things is the appearance of yet another actor wannabe Rap singer. This time it’s Sisqo’s turn to show that they shouldn’t bother and just stick to what he knows best. He plays ‘Dennis’ , Felix
8217;s mate, without any conviction – but I suppose his inclusion may add to few bottoms on seats from his fans and those curious to see what he can do. As an actor Sisqo is no Jon Bon Jovi - !!!!!! The much underused comedian Martin Short makes a terrific contribution to this film as an extremely camp drama teacher putting on a musical production of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’. Short has been in a number of excellent comedy movies, but does not seem to command the star billing of others – so fans must make do with his scene-stealing in films such as this. The Midsummer Night’s Dream production is the centrepiece to Berke’s attempts to win back his girl and the backdrop to the realisation that Kelly really is the one for him. The delivery of the Shakespeare is cheesy in the extreme, but I suppose that is done for effect as – after all – this IS a comedy! So all’s well that ends well. Plenty of laughs along the way – boy loses girls – boys finds new love….aaaah. No Oscars will be lavished on this – but if you are looking for an antidote to Pearl Harbor or are too scared of the scarab beetles in Mummy Returns – try this. Lightweight, Cheesy, Fluffy, Sexy and above all… Fun.
