Get Rich Or Die Tryin' is a film that is based loosely on the highly publicised story of Curtis '50 Cent' Jackson. In the film, he plays a character called Marcus, a boy whose mother was killed after a squabble relating to her drug dealing ways. Marcus swears revenge on her killer knowing that some day he will get even. His story takes him from a young boy living with his grandparents to a life of selling drugs on a street corner to trying to make his living as a rap artist, all while still focused on getting payback for his mother.
Overall the film wasn't bad. 50 cent wasn't asked to play a character he was unfamiliar with since it was basically himself. This meant that he could stay in his comfort zone and deliver a decent performance to make his character seem mostly believable. Some parts of his character didn't keep to this, especially the parts where he was still supposed to be acting around 16/17 while looking like he does currently.
The story would probably be considered to be unbelievable if large parts of it hadn't already happened in real life. While I'm sure the creators took every opportunity to embellish the story, they already had the framework with which to work.
Terrence Howard, Joy Bryant and the brilliantly named Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Mr Eko from Lost) add familiar faces to the cast and each bring good acting and credibility to the film.
Although the film won't be won't be at the top of most peoples recommended list, its not bad at all. Some other reviews I've read before buying it said it was terrible but this definitely isn't the case. I think it helped that until he can improve his acting skills, 50 cent wasn't asked to do too much, but what he did have to do, was all done well. Musically you get what you'd expect. A lot of hiphop music, with most coming from the main man himself. It's not a deep film that makes you think too much but it's not a simple action film either. The struggle to make it from nothing to something is always interesting to watch.
I was able to pick this up for under £5 from HMV but I'm sure it's probably the same on Amazon. It's not too expensive and will easily pass a few hours for you.
7/10
Summary: Worth picking up if you can get it cheap
