Action movies and James Bond-style spy thrillers get spoofed quite frequently, but such parodies usually meet with mixed reception - suffice to mention Spies Like Us by John Landis from 1985, and Johnny English by Peter Howitt from 2003. Both have lots of avid fans, yet an equally large group of viewers dismiss them as trash. The same is bound to happen to Get Smart by Peter Segal, a big screen adaptation of a popular American TV serial from 1965 that was revived in 1995. If slapstick and toilet humour are acceptable for you, then you will probably have a lot of fun, but if you have a problem with that, then you should steer clear of this movie. The ... Maxwell Smart has spent his whole life watching his friends becoming secret agents - every year taking the entry test and every year being forced to work as an analyst for the United States government. However, when a national threat emerges and Agents are being assassinated, he is the last option to ensure the safety of the nation. Armed with the secret services full resources and the help of the sexy Agent 99, a spy with a shady past, he has to unravel the mysteries that are threatening the lives of his friends. But can he trust all those around him? Get Smart is a relatively witty and stylish action/comedy which benefits from some strong performances and a ... Read the complete review

Get Smart is a spy spoof, it stars Steve Clarell and Anne Hathaway who are agents for an obscure American undercover department called Control. Control is a department looking at chatter around theworld and then jumping to action to prevent terrorist attacks, one group has stolen a nuclear warhead and are smewhere in the Cheynya mountains (you can always date a film by who the bad guys are, I mean who do you think the bad guys in a film from this year? Afghans I'd guess). Control is attacked and data stolen means that a load of agents around the world are killed. This leads to the promotion of Maxwell Smart (Steve Clarell) to the full status of agent, then ... Read the complete review

***Get Smart (2008)*** Pickings were a bit slim last night so my daughter was surfing Sky and came across this film, which we meant to see at the cinema but never got around to. I was a reluctant viewer as I didn't think that it looked that good to be honest... ***What Is It All About?*** This is basically a spy movie that is a comedy (based upon a tv series), focusing on Maxwell Smart (Steve Carell) and his desire to become an agent. He takes test after test, but keeps failing and has to be satisfied with being an analyst instead. Of course a terrorist plot comes to light and all of a sudden, Max looks like an attractive option. He ... Read the complete review

I like Steve Carrell. He is a natural comedian with excellent timing and a good sense for physical comedy. I've loved every episode of The Office, where Carrell takes on the David Brent role originally played by Ricky Gervais. Carrell's movie career thus far has been really on the coat-tails of other comedians such as Will Ferrell and Jim Carrey, but of late he's branched out on his own. The mediocre Evan Almighty was well, mediocre. The 40 Year Old Virgin was good as was the drama Dan In Real Life. Here, Carrell takes on the role of Maxwell Smart in an updated version of the American TV show of the same name. It's a big budget spectacle full of large ... Read the complete review
