Advantages: Light hearted comedy film - fun for all
Disadvantages: not to everyones taste -humour a bit childish
I saw this advertised last year but didnt feel that inclined to watch it although I found the trailers quite funny I presumed that I had probably seen the best bits and thought the humour might be a bit immature for me. (sometimes I find really childish humour annoying although it really does depend on how I am feeling.)
However when the dvd rental man came around tonight my step-son chose this to watch so I perservered and agreed to watch this as a family. (It is certified 12 but my step-son is 9 and I thought it was still suitable for him - it did have some bad language but not too frequent and not too strong)
I was quite surprised that I actually enjoyed this film, as did my partner and step-son. I must admit that we all laughed out loud at some of the more comic parts of the film (yes some of the humour was immature visual comedy but I must be in a good mood because it made me laugh).
The film is based around a newly appointed spy agent Maxwell Smart played by Steve Carell (also seen in Evan Almighty). After years of trying to get in the field battling obstacles such as his weight he only gets the chance when the CONTROL room has been ambushed and all of the other agents' identities have been discovered by KAOS (the terrorists). Agent 99 (Anne Hathaway) had drastic plastic surgery so her identity was safe leaving them to be partners. Agent 99 and Smart have to work together trying to save the world against nuclear threat from KAOS and manage to succeed with a combition of skill (Agent 99) and luck on behalf of Smart.
There is an underlying love story, some double crossing combined with comedy, major gadgetory (not always that usefull in Smarts case) and action. It was a fun family film to be enjoyed by everyone. I was impressed.
Also cast Dwayne Johnson (formerly The Rock) and Alan Arkin.
One to watch/rent if you have some time to spare for some light hearted fun (I wouldnt buy this as it is something you would probably only watch once though)
However this is not for everyone if you dont like Carells' previous work or lots of childish humour dont bother!
~ 4 stars for fun family entertainment ~
