However, Bertram takes a fancy to Gwen and from here the movie focuses on their relationship and whether Bertram can escape from the dead. The premise is unique with a great comedy element, but also many touching scenes. Gervais staring in his first Hollywod movie as a lead is natural in his stereotyped chubby little loser ch...more

Crowned Review Ghost Town (DVD): 'He sees dead people... and they annoy him' (1279 words)
by - written on 30/04/09 (Very useful, 215 readings)
Rating:

Ricky Gervais is no leading man, that's for sure, wisely not allowing himself to be cast in that territory for his first starring role in Hollywood. He's not the best looking Brit to step up from popular comedy television and certainly couldn't get away with getting the beautiful girl at the end of any Hollywood movie. What he is though is a bright guy and knew from the off that the traditional type of casting would never work, ending his movie career stone dead, Ricky expecting the Americans to probably cast him as the traditional British villain from over the pond if he did tackle a project like this. And as women mostly despise Ricky over here and probably said that ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review Ghost Town - Film Only (464 words)
by - written on 07/01/09 (Very useful, 50 readings)
Rating:

Ghost Town, directed by David Koepp (the much-in-demand screenwriter responsible for Spider-Man, Panic Room and Mission: Impossible, amongst many others) marks the first feature starring role for British comedian Ricky Gevais following a series of bit-parts and extended cameos in the likes of Night At The Museum and Stardust. Gervais plays Bertram Pincus, a curmudgeonly, misanthropic dentist who, following a series of "complications" during a routine colonoscopy, finds that he can not only see ghosts, but worse, the ghosts can see him, and, in the time-honoured tradition of such affairs, they're in dire need of some assistance. Chief ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review Ghost Town (DVD): Drop Dead Funny? (film only) (570 words)
by - written on 11/01/09 (Very useful, 178 readings)
Rating:

Ghost Town is all about Ricky Gervais. Ok, there are other people in it, Tea Leonie is one of them, but to find out who the others are I've had to look the film up. (Greg Kinnear and Billy Campbell, in case anyone cares.) The point is that they are all fairly forgettable and could have been interchanged with any one of dozens of pappy white bread Hollywood actors. Not a single one of them lends anything in terms of plot, drama, or most importantly comedy - the film is carried entirely by Gervais. No pressure then. I wasn't desperate to see this film, I'm not a fan of Hollywood and I tend to be a bit cynical (who, me?) - I'm not amused in the slightest by the ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review This town is going like a ghost town (1166 words)
by - written on 03/12/08 (Very useful, 111 readings)
Rating:

Ghost Town is a little like the the nursery rhyme about the little girl who had a little curl. When it's good, it's very, very good, but when it's bad, it's horrid. OK, maybe that's a slight exaggeration, but hopefully, it gives you the idea that it's a film of mixture of some good things and some very average ones. It's essentially been billed as The Sixth Sense with jokes, and that's a pretty apt description. Following a complication during a routine operation, grumpy dentist Bertram Pincus is suddenly able to see all the dead people who inhabit New York. The dead want help with their "unfinished business" and Bertram's the only one who can do it. ...  Read the complete review
