David Koepp directs this comedy movie GHOST TOWN.
The movie focuses on Ricky Gervais' character a dentist called Bertram Pincus who goes in for a routine medical operation. However, the operation goes wrong and Bertram dies on the table for seven minutes until he is brought back to life.
However, since the operation he discovers he can see dead people. One of the dead people he can see is Frank Herlihy played by Greg Kinnear who wants Bertram to break up his widow Gwen played by Tea Leoni's upcoming nuptials for him.
Bertram realises that the only way to get rid of the ghosts is to resolve all the unfinished business that needs to be done before he dies as this is why he beieves hecan see the dead.
However, Bertram takes a fancy to Gwen and from here the movie focuses on their relationship and whether Bertram can escape from the dead.
The premise is unique with a great comedy element, but also many touching scenes. Gervais staring in his first Hollywod movie as a lead is natural in his stereotyped chubby little loser character. While he is good, Gervais' should be careful not to get stereotyped in this role as it will get tedious. Kinnear is an unlikeable character which he pulls off while Leoni is sweet as the love interest.
The comedy is clever especially through the dialogue and highlights the clever writing. There are plenty of good one liners that are funny. It's the emotional aspect that is just as clever with some genuinly touching moments. There is a good soundtrack and the action moves at a good pace. The ending is good and fits the positive tone of the film.
The DVD extras include a commentary, interviews, deleted scenes and much more.
Lasting just over 90 minutes, with a 12 viewing certificate and avaliable from AMAZON at £5.98 this is a comedy movie with heart.
