Released in 1984, and subsequently going on to become the highest grossing film of 1984, is Ghostbusters.

Set in New York, Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis), Raymond Stantz (Dan Aykroyd), and Peter Venkman (Bill Murray) decide to get together and set up an organisation which is there purely and simply to monitor paranormal activity. With very little money between them, they set up shop in an old fire station and buy an old Cadillac to transport them around. They soon catch their first ghost (the ever popular Slimer) and then the flood gates open. They become inundated with calls and decide to hire Winston Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson) as their new member.

Coincidently, at the same time as Ghostbusters are up and running, Dana Barrett (Sigourney Weaver) notices some strange goings on in her apartment and, after seeing the television commercial, decides there is only one question on her mind; WHO YOU GONNA CALL? Ghostbusters are soon at her apartment and discover that there is some sort of monster living in her fridge and the film continues as Zuul (the monster) attempts to begin his reign of terror on New York City ,mwah ha ha ha ha (sorry, got a bit over enthusiastic with the evil laugh).

Written by Aykroyd and Ramis, Ghostbusters is a brilliant film that is essentially a comedy which specific points in the films which I, in my younger days, found to be quite scary at times with the main examples of this being the beginning library scene and the final rooftop scene.

The acting in the film is brilliant. Each individual character is played very well and all bring very different things to the movie. Murray and Aykroyd are both seasoned comedy actors and as usual deliver a brilliant performance while Ramis look and personality certainly make him a perfect fit for the role of Egon. Of course Weaver also delivers a very good performance as the sexy Dana Barrett who turns into a very evil Zuul. The supporting cast are also brilliant. Zeddemore is great as the fourth Ghostbuster and the addition of Rick Moranis and Annie Potts certainly add to the comedic value of the film.

Special effects are pretty poor by today's high standards but I certainly believe that they were pretty state of the art for the time. Don't expect to see any CGI or anything like that but it certainly has a great deal of kitsch value.

This is certainly a very entertaining film and, even at nearly 25 years old, still remains a great film to watch. A highly recommended watch if you haven't seen it already.

Summary: A Classic
