Advantages: Realistic Werewolf. Good Script & Plot. Good Ending.
Disadvantages: You Don't See Much Of The Werewolf. Tame Gore.
Directed by Brett Sullivank, Ginger Snaps Unleashed is a horror that was released in 2004, and is the second film in the Ginger Snaps trilogy. The film begins with Brigitte (Emily Perkins), who has been infected by the wolfs blood of her sister Ginger. After being found unconscious she is presumed to be a drug addict, and is incarcerated in an rehab clinic surrounded by suspicious inmates. Brigitte is unable to obtain a source of monkshood - the only known substance that can delay her transformation into a werewolf. In the clinic all is not what it seems and her priory is to escape. But when another girl is killed, she must discover who...or what is responsible. Is she being stalked by another werewolf, is it the ghost of her sister (who makes an appearance or two) or is it something more sinister.
Unleashed has a slow but promising beginning. It manages to encompass the same elements of horror, mystery, and cynical comedy which made the first film so great. The fact that the film focus more on Brigitte (who played the somewhat lesser role in the first film) is refreshing and putting her into deep end so to speak works well. The plot and actual script is pretty clever and well thought out so full marks. The werewolf has been well created. Granted you don't see much of it but when you do it is pretty impressive none the less. I enjoyed watching the staff at the clinic trying to work out what monkshood (which some called wolfs bane) 'really' does. The ending was good, better than I expected. The twist at the end took me by surprise. Watching it for a second time was helpful, as I picked up the clues and hits.
It's not as gory as the first film which is a shame. You can't have a successful werewolf film without some good gore here and there. As I've mentioned, you don't see much of the werewolf. This was a bit of a disappointment considering it was the focus of the film. The fear of actually turning into a werewolf is drawn out too much and has been done too many times. Again the film is slow to get going, and unfortunately you may loose interest before things get exciting. Finally it is seems to be lacking the magic that made Ginger Snaps such a great picture. Whereas before you fell in love with the characters and cared about what was going to happen to them, this time around you just don't feel as involved.
All things considered I think this film is a tame sequel. Which is a real shame considering . Don't get me wrong as Ginger Snaps Unleashed is still good, and it would have been hard to improve on the great first film, but I can't help think that it could have been, and more to the point should have been better.
Ginger Snaps Unleashed has definitely got it's moments. Personally however I was hoping for a film with more of a bite. I do strongly suggest that you watch the first film (simply called Ginger Snaps) before you watch this one.
