Advantages: Russel Crowe is magnificent

Disadvantages: None, awesome film

Russel Crowe won an oscar for this epic and rightly so, he really took the movie took the next level, when if someone else had done the role, like say Brad Pitt, it would have just been a good film. However this is a great film. He plays Maximus who is a hero and Emporer's favourite even ahead of his own son who is next in line. The emporer is getting on and knows his days are number so he tells his real son played excellent by Joaquin Phoenix that he will not be the emporer so his son returns the favour by killing him. Hmm is this a Fair trade? Then he goes and tries to kill Maximum, of course Maximum being the hero escapes and is enslaved to be a Gladiator, as the movie is aptly called.

Maximus as it turns out is pretty good at this gladiator fighting malarky, of course he has got all his war experience in hand and is a leader and he is only living for the hope that he can kill Commodus who killed his family.

"If there is a downside, it is that the quieter and perfectly acceptable plot stuff suffers simply because you can't wait for the next action sequence. But hey, who cares when you've got Russell Crowe fighting tigers? It's official: the Roman Empire is hip again."

Why remake a classic movie?
