To quote 'The general who became a Slave, the slave who became a Gladiator, the gladiator who defied an empire'. That sums up the film.
I thought the Gladiators DVD would be all blood and death but its far from it. The film actually has a story that is moving, and not predictable. Russell Crowe as Maximus is fantastic his portrayal of the part is unbeatable. The film work is quite breathtaking with scenery and costumes fantastic. The film opens up with a battle scene that flashes in front of you, as did the scenes from 'Braveheart'. The story line develops from there and works around Caesar wanting Maximus to take over from him when he dies but he tells his son who then murders him before the news can be released and he naturally becomes Caesar. I don't want to say anything more about it without spoiling the story line for those who have not seen it.
The double CD or collectors CD does not disappoint you the extras are amazing. The making of Gladiators is very interesting but there are stills, trailers, biographies and a number of other parts that I have not even got around to as yet.
A film that I will watch again and again, fantastic story line and out of this world filming.
