Advantages: Great acting and sets
Disadvantages: not historicallyaccurate
Gladiator is a great film, Russell Crow stars as Maximus, a one time general who looses his position when his emperor Marks Aurelius is murdered by his own son; Commodus (who happens to have an unhealthy interest in his own sister). Maximus escapes his own assassination only to find his wife and son murdered by Commodus.
He is captured and becomes a gladiator, and the story is that of how he rises to become a great gladiator and in the end defeats an emperor. Of course it is not that simple. There are political plots and subterfuge which appear to wreck the plans of those who are against Commodus, who is an authoritarian and brutal emperor as well as those who support him.
The ending is a sad one, but well worth watching.
If you want to watch an historically correct film this will be a disappointment, but if you want a spectacular epics this is just the thing.
