Advantages: a decent film
Disadvantages: can be boring
As the title and dvd box suggest this is a movie about football. But don't let that put you off. Goal is so much more than that. It is the usually rags to riches story but based around the beautiful game itself.
It tells the story of Santiago Munez, a poor mexican kid living in america with his Dad, brother and grandma. He is, of course a fantastic footballer, but remains unnoticed in the lower USA leagues untill by some luck, he manages to get spotted by an ex-newcastle scout. Then the is the usual battle of 1) getting him to england, 2) getting the toon to even look at him and 3) allowing his dad to let him go.
Of course they all happen and soon Santi is in Newcastle where he meets Gavin Harris, the newcastle playboy but the fans hate him, and Jamie a fellow gordie reserve. After meeting the nurse (played by pushing dasies Anna Friel-who does a gordie accent well) for his medical Santi immediatley falls for her (which was obvious) and after lieing about having asthma, he passes. But more drama as a jealous teammate crushes his inhaler and when Santo plays badly he is relased.
But by some twist of fate Gavin manages to get him back to the reserves and suddenly Santi plays brilliantley again and he plays in the final game at liverpool. The final twist is that unfortunatley his father dies due to a heartattack and Friel telling Jamie that he will never play football ever again.
As per Hollywood, Santi scores the winning goal in the last seconds and Newcastle go through to the Champions league.
Overall, it's a film that i'm not going to shout and sing its praises but it is enjoyable and does kill a good hour or so. Obviously aimed for Newcastle fans and football fans in general but it is a film that could be watched by others although they may find it boring during the footie bits.
Summary: and ok film but seen better
