Goldfinger (DVD) ... ... / DVD released 03 November, 2003 at Mgm Home Ent. (Europe) Ltd. / Features of the DVD: PAL / Dry as ice, dripping with deadpan witticisms, only Sean Connery's Bond would dare to disparage the Beatles, that other 1964 phenomenon. No one but Connery can believably seduce women so effortlessly, kill with almost as much ease, and then pull another bottle of Dom Perignon 53 out of the fridge. Goldfinger contains many of the most memorable scenes in the Bond series: gorgeous Shirley Eaton (as Jill Masterson) coated in gold paint by evil Auric Goldfinger and deposited in Bond's bed; silent Oddjob, flipping a razor-sharp bowler like a Frisbee to sever heads; our hero spread-eagled on a table while a laser beam moves threateningly toward his crotch. Honor Blackman's Pussy Galore is the prototype for the series' rash of man-hating supermodels. And Desmond Llewelyn reprises his role as Q, giving Bond what is still his most impressive car, a snazzy little number that fires off smoke screens, punctures the tyres of vehicles on the chase, and boasts a handy ejector seat. Goldfinger's two climaxes, inside Fort Knox and aboard a private plane, have to be seen to be believed.--Raphael Shargel, Amazon.com-- On the DVD: Featuring interviews with Honor Blackman, Shirley Eaton, the late Desmond Llewelyn and most of the surviving core cast and crew members, great on-set footage (Blackman and Connery look like they clearly had the hots for each other even when the camera weren't rolling) and a strong argument about how this firmed up the gadget-orientated, thrills-and-spills formula for the franchise, John Cork's "making of" featurette for this DVD is one of the most rewarding in this series. The two commentary tracks have moderately interesting observations by director Guy Hamilton, the cast and crew (many of their comments recycled from the documentary), and on both Bond superfan-and-author Lee Pfeiffer filling in blanks and explaining in exhaustive detail the history of the Aston Martin DB5 that first appeared in this film. Also included is an open-ended 1964 interview with Sean Connery, designed so that American radio disc jockeys could pretend they had an exclusive interview with the star, in which he extols the series' "sadism for the family" among other things. --Leslie Felperin

Ian Fleming's James Bond series of films has been around now for nigh on 40 years. Of course, it's had it's highs and lows, but with Pierce Brosnan as the ubiquitous hero, it's back to being near it's best again. However, during the course of a recent pub conversation with other Bond fans, the question was raised: "Which is the best Bond film?" My answer was "Goldfinger" and a recent viewing has only strengthened this point of view. ? Pussy Galore: "My name is Pussy Galore" ? Bond: "I must be dreaming!" James Bond (Sean Connery) is asked by the Bank of England and ...  Read the complete review

~ ~ The third James Bond movie, Goldfinger, directed by Guy Hamilton, was released in December 1964, with our intrepid MI6 hero again being played to perfection by everybody’s favourite Scotsman, Sean Connery. If any modern day director wants to learn how to make the definitive spy movie, then they could do worse than take this film home and study it closely. The gravel-voiced Sean is at his suave and debonair best and on the very top of his form in Goldfinger, which has been feted as the best ever Bond movie, a title I would have to agree it very richly deserves. (at least of the Connery films) ~ ~ This film is about as good as it gets, and just ...  Read the complete review

1964 brought us Goldfinger and it was the first of four Bond films directed by Guy Hamilton. With more glamorous locations, cars, gadgets and action than the previous two films, Goldfinger sets the mould for future Bond films. The pre-titles sequence sees Bond sabotaging a drug baron's base with a huge explosion and afterwards dispatches with an assassin after electrocuting him. The film starts quickly and you feel part of the story right away. Bond is sent to observe Auric Gold finger (Gert Frobe), an expert in gold, who is believed to be smuggling the precious metal for financial gain. Bond has meetings with Goldfinger in Miami, an English golf course and ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review A Golden Bond Film (716 words)

I had planned to write an op on each James Bond film as they were shown on TV, but with those darn A-level exams I didn't manage to make the first two films, so I joint the trail here with Goldfinger, the third James Bond film starring the legendary Sean Connery. The film is just your average bond film, and opens with the usual explosions, girls and fights. After setting off an explosion Bond returns to his room, complete with girl. He is ambushed but uses the girl as a human shield, which wasn't really what I thought to be Bonds style. He naturally dispatches the bad guy, so cue the intro and music!! He then goes to the beach and we are ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Goldfinger (DVD): "No Mr Bond I expect you to die" (441 words)

The third film to roll out of the James Bond Band-wagon. It was an absolute corker. Sean Connery had really began to get into his role of Bond and the film emphasized on hi-tech elements which revolutionised the James bond series. The film contained the regulars, as usual: M, moneypenny, Q, Bond, the girs and the memorable villans. Like the villans, the film was memorable too. Bond's mission in this film is to track down on a suspected gold smuggler- Auric Goldfinger. Firstly, bond tries to humilate Goldfinger. Bond and Goldfingers confederate expose Goldfingers cheating ways at cards and Bond, who chalanges Goldfinger to a game of golf- exposes his ...  Read the complete review
