This, with 'Dr. No', is for me the best Bond film. I saw it when it first came out, grew up with it, and can quote quite a few of the best lines ('No, Mr. Bond, I expect you to die ...'). It is genuinely sinister in places - poor Shirley Eaton, killed by the creepy method of being painted gold from head to foot. It is genuinely funny too, has a splendidly gung-ho villain in Gert Frobe and a marvellous sidekick in Odd-Job with his interesting metal hat, a lithe performance from a still fairly young Sean Connery and an excellent female foil in Honor Blackman.

The plot is centralized around James Bond's efforts to stop criminal mastermind, Goldfinger, from contaminating Fort-Knox's gold supplies with atomic radiation. Such a storyline provides the perfect blend of action, adventure, gunplay, gadgetry and, of course, the beautiful bond-girls (Pussy Galore in particular).

It is also well-paced and, while not short of spectacular scenes, places them in such a way that they have their full effect - some of the later films are a good illustration of the dictum 'less is more' (or, in their case, more is less). And on top of that there's the best introductory tune, with Shirley Bassey's platinum lungs on top form. Very very enjoyable.
