Der Golem is an official lost 'classic' from the old silent German film making era which reached its zenith with films like Metropolis and The Cabinet of Dr Caligari.

The film is based on old jewish folklore. The Golem was a protector of the Jewish people. If any person harmed any jew then the Golem would come and exact revenge.

Details of the plot for the film are sketchy because of the hinderence that no film prints are now in public circulation anywhere in the world.

There still remains some 'lobby Card' stills from the films original release and they shown a confrontation between Teutonic soldiers and a monster (Golem).

It is likely that some scenes from Der Golem may exist in private hands but it is not likely that the full film exists in any form anywhere.

The moster from the original has been said to have inspired the monster in Mann's 'The Keep' which also features the myth of the Golem but this time fighting National Socialists rather then Teutonic Knights.

There could be a time in the future whereby the print doe's turn up just as some films considered 'lost' have turned round and become 'found' but I wouldn't hold my breath.

*UPDATE* As always information is subject to change.
It seems that in 1958,yes 1958, a surviving nitrate copu was found in the hands of a private collector who was able to create a new print of the film. This information comes from a website addy which can be found on the comments list. I DO NOT KNOW IF THE INFORMATION ON THE WEBSITE IS CORRECT OR NOT.

It would be so cool if this film did exist somewhere.

This site says a little about the story, and how a copy was discovered in the posession of a collector in 1958 and restored. Of course they may be wrong, but here it is anyway:

I think Dooyoo have the date wrong as well, but erm, thats nothing new in the movie section ;o)

Like I said, interesting reading nonetheless and apparently Wegener remade it in 1920 as Der Golem: Wie Er in die Welt Kam which sounds like it might be worth checking out because that definitely is available on video and apparently papered over the mistakes made in the original from what I am led to believe.
