Based on the book by Roberto Saviano, Gomorrah is an attempt to penetrate, and in doing so, to expose, the façade of Neapolitan life by highlighting the insidious, cancerous activities of the Camorra, a mafia-like criminal fraternity that operates within the city of Naples. Like City of God (a film this is often and unfairly compared to), Gomorrah is a story of the lower end of the crime hierarchy. Moving away from the glamorous sleaze and violence of top-down gangster films such as The Godfather and Goodfellas, Gomorrah gives us the grit and the grime of the city's sprawling underclass, describing how the criminal network pervades all areas of their lives. ... Gomorrah is an Italian made film released in 2008 which addresses the lives of members of the Camorra, a mafia style organised crime ring based in and around Naples and Caserta. Directed by Matteo Garrone and based on a book by Roberto Saviano, this film received a great deal of positive reviews from the critics when it was released, indeed it was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film and won the Grand Prix at Cannes (2008). Based on this I was anxious to see the film, being a big fan of Italy and foreign language films in general, plus having a genuine fascination with mafia type activity, I expected violence but believed it must have ... So, if you keep up with your movie trivia then you will know that 'Gomorra', from the book of the same name (pronounced 'Gomorahh'), garnered great publicity because writer Robert Saviano earned death threats for his expose of the Naples Camorra (the mans mafia), the author now under constant police protection for his betrayal, he himself once a low level member of the Camorra, a man who knows, hence the best selling 'non fiction' book in Italy. Some say he wasn't as 'connected' as he says and this was a clever stunt to sell his book. The director, Matteo Garrone, also got in on the subterfuge of the 'method', living for two months in the infamous Neapolitan quarter of ... Read the complete review

Gomorrah is an Italian mafia film with a difference. Based on the best selling book by Roberto Saviano it looks at the mafia from the inside by introducing and following people instead of having a storyline that focuses on the action and violence associated with the criminal organisation. The main characters in the film are of varying ages and have a widely different level of activity in the mafia gang contolling the area of Naples where the film is set. In fact their actual involvement in any criminal actions are very minimal. Gomorrah avoids the expected and traditional expose of the mafia by concentrating on the peripheral people involved, doing ... Read the complete review

Gomorrah-A realistic must see movie ----------------------------------------------- I saw this movie as this was based on Roberto Saviano's bestseller and I could not resist the temptation of going for it. The film highlights the operation of the illegal traffics, corruption and crime. This movies is built around stories of people from Naples and their dealing with local mafia - Camorra. I loved the way director Matteo Garrone has portrayed the entire mafia enterprise operation. Typically the hide and seek game of mafia with police and the way mafia is back firing police sets the tone for the movie. The background set of typical gang war ... Read the complete review
