Advantages: Good action film

Disadvantages: Not much depth, but this is not needed

Gone in 60 Seconds is a remake of a 1974 film written by H B Halicki. It is directed by Dominic Sena, and features a famous cast and some fast cars, all accompanied by a rocking soundtrack to give car lovers and those who enjoy action films a bit of a ride!

Memphis Raines (Nicolas Cage) used to be the best car thief out there. Untouchable, he would get any car he wanted. Retired following too many close encounters with the law, he returns to his home town to find that his little brother Kip (Giovanni Ribisi) has gotten involved with the wrong people and is in trouble. Memphis agrees to steal a number of cars in order to ensure the safe release of his brother, but reverting back to his old life isn;t going to be easy, especially when his return has been noted by the law, too.

The main thing about this film is the fast car aspect. There are some beautiful cars on show here, and some loud revving can only help to give a testosterone filled film that extra little kick. The 'gang' feel to the film is recreated when Memphis contacts his old crew to do the job, stealing 50 cars in next to no time at all. There are some good performances from many of the actors, including Angelina Jolie as Sway, Scott Caan as Tumbler, and Vinnie Jones as The Sphinx. Delroy Lindo and Timothy Olyphant give us a treat as the cops hot on the heels of Raines and his gang, and the remainder of the cast give us a good show as well.

But it is Nicolas Cage who steals the show. The actor is very good in this film, as he is in most of his roles. He is thoroughly convincing as the ex-car thief forced back into doing what he does best against his wishes. The plot has come up trumps, adn this is pure enjoyment. There is some cheesy acting involved at times, in a very similar way to The Fast and The Furious, with Vin Diesel and Paul Walker, but the two films are different enough in style to lack too much of a comparison.

Overall, I was impressed with this film. It is by no means a masterpiece, and it wouldn't feature in any top ten lists I have, but it is harmless entertainment, and you don't have to think about it too much. The DVD is available from amazon.co.uk for £4.98.

Summary: Good action film with some fast cars!
