Randall Raines (Nicholas Cage) moved on from his life as one of the biggest car thieves in Los Angeles in the mid nineties. His brother Kip (Giovanni Ribisi) however keeps up the trade and forms his own group for his very own grand theft auto. After getting work from notorious Raymond Calitri (Christopher Eccleston) to get together a collection of his chosen cars, Kip finds himself in deeper than he realizes. When he fails to reach Calitri's standards of auto theft it comes down to his brother to step in and try to not only save the day, but Kip's life. It isn't an easy situation however. Randall (known as Memphis to close friends) has to get 50 of the most exotic cars within the Long Beach district in just one night. The reward being $200,000 for a completed job is completely out weighted by death to his brother if the target is not reached.
Memphis knows he cannot do this along and decides to call in some old friends from his very own car thieving days. With a mixture of experts in the trade teaming together, including Sara Wayland (Angelina Jolie), an old romance of Memphis, time is ticking to get these chosen cars.
When things couldn't be more difficult Memphis walks into an old 'friend' being Detective Roland Castlebeck (Delroy Lindo) whose keen to know why his suddenly back in town after a 47% drop in theft after Memphis' disappearance. Now not only Kip's life is in jeopardy, but Randall's could end up behind bars.
The plot itself isn't too strenuous to understand. It's a basic structure to a basic action film in my opinion, but I don't find this being a problem. With it not being too serious it's an easy watch for a night in with a friend or two. There are many characters involved in the film and many famous faces throughout, however only few such as Nicolas Cage and Delroy Lindo have main roles with the rest simply playing a part in the background. Even Angelina Jolie hasn't got the most exciting role in the film.
The first half of the film, while not to be described as 'slow', just lacks a lot of action that you feel it could use to grasp the viewer in. It mainly consists of a basic background story, along with the meeting and greetings of new characters that eventually make up the 'team'. Once the second half kicks in however it's pure and simple. There's no possible way for someone to be confused as to what's happening as it couldn't be more in your face and simple. However this is what makes it an easy film to watch and enjoy without putting too much strain on your brain! Whilst its sneaking and chasing for the majority of the film towards the end it doesn't get too much or become too boring or repetitious for the viewer and everything seems to be spiced up in its own unique way from chase to chase. The ending, while not exactly outrageously well thought, is still a good ending in my opinion. Things get rounded off but I will not mention much more.
Another good feature of the movie is some of the sound clips used. We all know a silent movie doesn't have the same effect as a full on 5.1 Dolby digital movie with a killer soundtrack. There are a good selection of clips of songs played from artists such as BT (popular in the Fast and Furious soundtracks, another car based film) and the Chemical Brothers.
If you have a night in, a few beverages and maybe even a big tub of popcorn then it's definitely a film to enjoy. With its action from the second half onwards and pure simplicity throughout it makes it an easy night in but well worthwhile. These days it can be purchased for as little as £4 so it's not exactly an expensive film to see, especially as you may find yourself watching it time and time again. I know I have! Enjoy.
Summary: An easy night in with exciting action
