Advantages: Now you know how to break into a car

Disadvantages: Where's my car gone?

After the Bruce-versus-the-boulder extreme action of Armageddon, it was a puzzle how überproducer Jerry Bruckheimer could top it. The answer was to go back to Earth with a roar and revisit the fast cars and faster women he last gave us in Days Of Thunder eleven years ago.

Thirty-seven films into his career with more than £11 billion generated worldwide, you know what to expect from a Bruckheimer movie. The plot is the mother of all high concept pitches: a retired car thief (Cage) and his old crew have three days to steal 50 exotic automobiles, or his kid brother (Ribisi) gets tenderised in a car crusher. It’s the chase sequence from The Rock times three with a hint of The Magnificent Seven.

Although Sena doesn’t record an audio commentary (it’s Bruckie’s movie anyway), every aspect is covered within the dozen-odd featurettes. ‘Action Overload’ is a bizarre one and a half minutes of clips from the set-pieces, presumably for people too busy to watch the film. ‘Conversations With Jerry Bruckheimer’ is the first of what we hope will be a recurring series for DVDs: eight minutes of a filmmaker taking a fast-paced retrospective of his career with clips from past and future projects, in this case some ace early footage of Pearl Harbor.

Once it gets into gear, Gone In 60 Seconds is a diverting, unchallenging and fun way to spend two hours. The disc is a similarly fast and loose collection of trivia nuggets.
