Advantages: some good action sequences

Disadvantages: bad villain, dialougue, cliched characters

Whenever you hear the name Jerry Bruckheimer you know pretty much what you're going to get.

Gone In 60 Seconds isn't a bad movie, it's just not a very good one. The basic plot is this. A retired car thief Memphis Raines is forced back into the game to steal 50 cars in three days to save the life of his brother. He assembles a crew of old school thiefs as well as enlisting the talents of some new blood. All the while the clock is ticking and they have the police hot on their tail. Will memphis make it in time, save his brother and avoid getting caught ?

Well you already can guess the outcome before the film starts. This is a very large ensemble movie with a lot of recognised faces. Cage has been doing these roles ever since he won the Oscar but he's always entertaining. Jolie looks bad and very trashy, shes also not really used that much. Robert Duvall as always brings some grounding to the affair but again hasn't got much to do. Delroy Lindo as the cop is also great and I don't why he isn't in more big movies. These are the plus points of the cast but they are joined by some poor choices.

Ribisi as Cage's brother is just plain annoying. He basically plays it as his character in friends but with a more greased look. He sounds like he's half asleep and frankly I couldn't care less if he ended up dead in the film. Also for some reason there is the cliched wisecracking cool black guy who is unfunny and very annoying. He is paired with Vinnie Jones who doesn't say anything but I would personally have loved him to lay his partner out. However the worst member is the villain of the film played by brit Christopher Eccleston. he gets some terrible lines right the way through and even though he's english, his accent sounds unconvincing. Any villain who is scared of someone breaking their handcrafted furniture is someone who has all the threat of a mouse.

The film moves along at rock video pace
which is no suprise considering Dominic Senas previous work. There are some well staged action sequences which give you the no-brain factor that keeps you watching. The end stunt however is a bit too far fetched to work. The director shoots the cars at lightening pace to capture the speed but seems to have forgotten about what the characters are saying, The script is so weak with it's words.

This is a film that is entertaining but instantly forgettable. it could have been a lot better. The film is about a race against time but there never really is any threat of going against the clock and no danger to try and overcome.

The last thing I'll say is that for all the moeny spent on the film, the opening titles sequence features some of the dodgiest doctored family photos I've ever seen.
