Advantages: Looks good and some decent action.
Disadvantages: Seen it all before.
Gone In 60 Seconds stars Nicolas Cage as Randall “Memphis” Raines an ex car thief who is forced to return to crime in order to save his younger brother's life. In order to do this he has to take over the job that his brother failed to complete. After getting some old friends back together all Cage has to do is steal 50 specific cars in one night and delivering them to Raymond Calitri who is played by English actor Christopher Eccleston. Cage also has to contend with cop Roland Castlebeck (Delroy Lindo) who is hot on his tail. Ex footballer Vinny Jones appears as Sphinx, a member of Cage’s gang and a man of few words. Jones certainly looks menacing enough and I’m sure we will see more of him in Hollywood movies. Cage’s love interest is supplied by the pouting Angelina Jolie and very sexy she looks too but their relationship doesn’t really add anything to the overall plot and I do feel her role had as much to do with promoting the film as anything else. Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer who also collaborated with Cage on both Con Air and The Rock you could be forgiven for thinking that this film will be something special and that is where the problem lies. You see its not quite as good as you thought it would be and despite an excellent cast which also includes Oscar winner Robert Duval and Will Patton the film never really hits the spot. I get the impression that none of the cast had their acting abilities truly tested. The film builds up fairly slowly with a lot of emphasis on the lead up to the deadline and its only during the latter part of the film that it really kicks into gear, albeit a very cliched one. Some credit should go to director Dominic Sena (Kalifornia) for the films big car chase scene, its well filmed and has plenty of focus on the actual drivers themselves. At the time of writing the film is available on Region 1 DVD but a Region 2 release is due soon. At first glance the dis
c looks packed with features but sadly it lacks both deleted scenes and a commentary. It does have however very nice menu screens and the extras are mainly in the form of behind-the-scenes featurettes. Also included is the theatrical trailer and the music video for The Cult song “Painted On My Heart” which is a good tune. I did enjoy Gone In 60 Seconds and its not a bad film but its not a great one either.

- 22/04/01 Good review, and a good film, but I felt this film was lacking something. Can't quite put my finger on it. |
