Gone in sixty seconds. No that’s not Vinnie Jones Hollywood career. Or Robbie Williams in a straight bar but a tame overly long no brainier, car chaser film that’s trying to be Tarrantino cool yet fails to impress and is basically a vehicle of a lesser class for Nick Cage and his new low hairline rather than a classic car movie.
Memphis Raines (Cage) was once the hottest car thief in Orange county (L.A), but had long since hung up his coat hanger to run a small go kart track for little kids out in the suburbs of California. But back in the city his little brother who’s in the biz he learnt from big brother Cage has messed up big and his boss wants some payback.
The villain in question is of course a nasty Brit who has an aversion to wood and persists in reading all his lines like a bit part actor on Eastenders allowing the Yankee audiences to hate him even more. Theres a lot of wood in this film so he must have had a great time in filming it.
Cage rocks up with the ten grand to free his brother from the nasty geezer. But the deal isn’t as simple as that and the only way to stop his kid brother (Giovanni Ribissi) meeting his end in a car crusher Cage has to steel fifty cars in four days or its adios family.
The Long Beach gangs are on his back to in the movie so you kinda wonder why he didn’t just call the police and have em raid the place and pick up the bad guy. But the show must go on and Memphis Raines has to pick a crew to pull of the daring deed for the two hundred grand wages, and the family.
His right hand chop shop man from the old days is Mitch (Robert Duvall) who still thinks he’s in Days of Thunder and other friends from the old crew including the pointless love interest in the form of the prosthetic Angeline Jolie that still looks like Lara Croft in this. She has to put on lipstick in a scene to show those fake lips to the camera and smile in a pathetic attempt to get more work. It seems.
Vinnie
Jones (Sphinx) is a less than talkative member of the team who of course specialists in being a heavy which is still seemingly stretching his acting skills as he even messes the one line he has near the end of the movie.
The plans are laid out with the help of his kid brother’s young crew and all their modern gismos to do the “boost”. But on their trail are two Wiley L.A cops trying to break the ring before the boat leaves from port with fifty gleaming sports cars.
With 24 hours left the boost begins without the owners having a clue, Cage and Jolie get sexy and the film gets boring. The action does hot up when Memphis realizes that the cops are on to them and decides to steel the cars they need from alse where resulting in a spectacular chase John Woo style through the streets of La.
Apart from this chase there isn’t a whole lot to shout about in this film and if your renting for a chase you should try Ronin with Robert Deniro, Even Princess Diana didn’t see Paris that quick.
If your renting just for Jolie then don’t bother as you don’t see any of her best tattoo’s and acting is not required, hence the casting of our Vinny.Duvall and everyone else have an easy ride so don’t expect much there either.
Nicholas Cage was tipped as the new Deniro using similar method acting techniques and creativity. Since leaving Las Vegas he hasn’t even bothered to steer away from the big cheques over acclaim.
If you want to see a cool car chase glossy fun movie for the weekend then rent Bad Boys with Will Smith as it does this genre a whole lot better.
Will Memphis bring in the big 50???…Hello Mcfly!
