Advantages: Great action all the way, Lovely car chases
Disadvantages: Plot? Where?, Acting at times is not up to par
Gone in 60 Seconds can be summed up as the typical summer blockbuster, no brains, but action trousers all the way. The thing is that it doesn't suffer (much) because of this, it does what it sets out to do all along. The film starts off by introducing us to a guy named Kip Raines who has tried and failed to steal 50 cars for a gangland boss. With time fast running out, Kip turns to his elder brother Randall Raines (played by Nicholas Cage), who used to be the best car thief around and has since retired from the game. With only 78 hours left, Randall (nicknamed Memphis) has to steal the 50 cars in order to save his brother. That is basically the plot and it doesn't get much more detailed than this. However, it doesn't really need to, as the film's intention is simply to entertain rather than become a thesis on car thieves and their motives for stealing. Angelina Jolie (soon to be seen on the silver screen in Tomb Raider) appears as Sway, Memphis's ex-girlfriend and a car theif in her own right, alongside as many other criminal friends that Memphis can muster (including Vinnie Jones, who seems to be in everything these days but never seems to have anything much to say in them!) The fellow thieves get together and the action commences, although the best scenes are not really seen until nearer the end of the movie. What is here is entertaining (in the purely popcorn sense) and although there are no great oscar winning moments or outstanding acting, it holds together as only an action film can. The main reason for seeing this film is the car chases. Some classic cars are made to perform to the max in some really great chase scenes, not least when Cage races against the clock, heading towards the docks with the police in hot pursuit. So, lack of acting and shallow plot aside, this film is suitable for most of the action movie fans out there that are simply after a fast ride in expensive cars and don't want to
get burdened too much with any difficult plot twists or sub-plots. It has great cars, burning rubber and some fantastic chase scenes. It also has Angelina Jolie. What more could you want? Plot? Who needs it, I'll take the car instead.
