Advantages: Shiny motors, Vinnie Jones
Disadvantages: lacking plot
If you believe that the main adjective that can be applied to a car is a colour and/or that the purpose of a car is getting from A to B, then you won't really see the point of this film. If however, when writing your Dooyoo "top ten TV programmes" op you considered anything including a certain Jeremy Clarkson, or the following mean something to you; 6 cylinder, turbocharged, 156 bhp, mid engined (any other adjective which means very little to your average female), and believe that a car needs to look the business then you will probably enjoy this! This is a blokes film - no possible question about it - lots of cars, action and dialogue and short on plot but who quite frankly cares? Nicholas Cage plays the role of Randall Raines, a retired car thief who comes out of retirement to save his younger brother from all sorts of nasty things. He is set the seemingly impossible task of stealing 50 cars to order in one night. "We might as well call prison and make reservations". Okay - so the plot is hardly rocket science but it paves the way for an enjoyable if not incredible boy's action movie. This is actually a remake of a cult 1974 film, which has the dubious claim to fame of hosting the longest car chase on celluloid. I haven't seen the original but understand that it is rawer and less Hollywood (read "better") than this one. The cult status of the original together with Jerry Bruckheimer as the producer was presumably the reason why such a good cast was assembled. The talents of Nick Cage, Robert Duval and Angelina Jolie are really wasted in this production. They put in fair performances, but given the quality of the material available, are never really given the chance to shine. Added to this, former football thug, now movie thug Vinnie Jones plays the part of Sphinx, appearing in 4 scenes and stealing every single one of them - if you enjoyed him in Lock Stock then you'll fin
d this a good laugh too. Not a classic - but good, hi-octane fun. Certainly worth renting if you fancy sitting back and being entertained on a rainy afternoon!
