Advantages: Vinnie, The Cars
Disadvantages: Nepotism
Gone in 60 Seconds USA 2000, 15, 113 Minutes Director Dominic Senna Starring Nicolas Cage, Angelina Jolie Christopher Eccleston, Giovanni Ribisi, Vinnie Jones I sometimes wonder if having a relative in the industry should automatically bar one from acting. With these two leads I remember why. Cage is, I have to say it almost quite likeable in this millennium rehash of the far superior 70’s original. Still the effects are better (computers see). To save his dodgy brother Nick has to go back to doing what he once did so well, Joy Riding....no sorry stealing cars. Can he make it? Do we care? Well yes actually, the film runs along nicely, it makes sense most of the time too. The villain is another Anglophile (shades of MI:2), and gets what he deserves. Nothing is made of the love interest except for a potentially steamy front seat manoeuvre that strangely could have been quite exciting, bit alas like the film it fizzled out. Vinnie? Splendid debut, ritualised violence, intimidation, and predictably Zen like spoken contribution mark him out as one to watch. Better than MI:2 in my humble. That's not saying much.
