Advantages: fast cars, lots of action and suspense

Disadvantages: nope....can't think of any

Usually I?m not very keen on films starring Nicholas Cage (although I did like Raising Arizona). I wasn?t at all confident that this film would be any good before I went to see it recently. The main reason for my husband and I going was the trailer we had seen featuring screeching classic American cars. It turned out that I was wrong to have doubted this film. It does help if, like us, you are an American car/drag racing enthusiast and appreciate the shapes and sounds of the cars that feature in the film. The basic story is about an ex professional car thief (Cage) called Memphis who is emotionally blackmailed by an evil British Northerner into having to return to his past trade. In order to save his brother?s life, he has to successfully steal an order of 50 specifically listed cars in the space of a few days. After calling on a few ex-car-thief colleagues (including Robert Duvall, Angelina Jolie and Vinnie Jones) to help him, the team only have one night in which to successfully carry out all 50 thefts and get the cars back to a depot ready to be shipped off. Some of the cars they steal are awesome and it?s a shame more time wasn?t spent on them (especially watch out for the red Dodge Challenger). The car chases are amazing. Throughout the film, a local cop is very suspicious of Memphis' return to his town and is hot on his tail, desperate to find out what his team are up to. That is the basic plot and the film is well supported by the action and suspense of the overnight operation taking place. Vinnie Jones doesn?t play a significant part in the film but gets a couple of good scenes. He plays a mute so, if you?re a Jones fan, don?t go to the film expecting to hear much from him. You can appreciate the sounds of the V8 engines much more if you see this film at the cinema. My final word is that this is the first film I?ve been too where I forgot to eat my popcorn ? that?s how engrossed I was!
