Advantages: Strong cast, soundtrack
Disadvantages: Storyline is a little unbelievable
- 50 gorgeous sports cars - A blonde Angelina Jolie. Sounds like a perfect film. And if that isn't enough for you people, well here's a proper review. In a remake on the 1974 film of the same name, Nicholas Cage stars as 'Memphis' an ex-car thief turned nice who has, in order to save his brother's life, to return to car boosting and in the space of 3 days steal 50 sports cars. His brother is Kip (Giovanni Ribisi - best known as Pheobe's brother in 'Friends') has followed in his big brother's footsteps but lacks the skill and has got himself in trouble. So a nasty British type with a love for wood (a Sandolin user if ever I saw one) tells Cage that he must steal 50 cars for him in 72 hours to save his brother. Cage then sets about recruiting his old gang consisting of the completely silent Vinnie Jones, the compeletly wrinked Robert DuVall and the completely gorgeous Angelina Jolie. Admittedly, it's a weak plot but with great cars, lots of action, a great dance soundtrack (featuring Moby, The Chemicals, Groove Armada) and A-listers (Cage and Jolie are both Oscar winners) it turns out to be one of the best films of the summer. Interestingly, for an action film, it rarely features big explosions and big guns and gadgets that you'd usually expect. This adds up to make G.I.S.S. one of the more releastic action films produced in the previous years (though it doesn't face stiff competition - James Bond falling on top of the Millennium Dome in T.W.I.N.E, A leading lady SHORTER than Tom Cruise in M:I 2). That is, of course, apart from the big ramp jump at the end. (But according to some American with way too much time on his hands, if the ramp was at 70 degrees that jump is possible) It is silly, but it's great escapism and a very stylish action film.

- 04/09/00 Now, this is one film I did get to see, it's fantastic, I'm not usually the Action Film type but I really enjoyed it.
Since watching Nicholas Cage in City of Angels (I think thats wot its called) I thought he was brilliant, I'm starting to become a Nicholas Cage film fanatic, I've watched about 3 more of his films since, just because of him, he made this film well worth watching. |
