Advantages: A lot of great cars to look at and occasional funny momments
Disadvantages: Excitment that never really peaks and a whole lot of old ideas. Anti-climax's through-out.
Gone In 60 Seconds is another action movie full of tired ideas. In an age when there are literally hundreds of films featuring cars chases, guns and stunts what puts this above the rest? In truth, nothing. A number of things bug me about this film. First of all, and I make this comment as proud Brit rather then a movie critic, why was every single bad guy, from the boss to the henchmen, an Englishman? Just like titanic and many films other films before it, GI60S'S paints the Americans as the heros and the British as the stupid and evil ones. Perhaps this only bothers me, but I'm sick of Hollywood insisting Americans save the worlds and all other nations are to be laughed at. The plot? Well that it's self was faily original. The story followed the bad guys, and in a novel twist the film had you routing for the car theifs to truimph. Although this is not an enterily new concept, it was a bit different from the tradional roles of good and evil found in movies. That said, a plot concerning a bunch of car theifs was undoubtly more intended to allow high paced car chases then to challenge conventional rules of the cinema. What of the characters? Well old Nick Cage is his usal un-enthusiatic self, the same boring and deadly serious man we see in all his films. Aside from him we have the token women, a highly attractive blonde who the writers could have at least tried to make important - was I the only one who felt a bit patronized at the sight of this blantant piece of eye-candy? Then we have the cast of sub-characters. These range from the amusingly silent Vinnie Jones, who to be fair made a great hard-man sterotype, to the token loud-mouthed black guy who cracked jokes Chris Rock/Eddie Murphy style throughout. All in all, I can't say I really enjoyed this film. Even the car chases, which are obviously what is meant to make the film appealing, aren't that impressive. Some token characters like Jones raise a smile
, but in the end it's a promising plot spoiled by cliched actions squences and events. Everything in this film has been seen before, and in an industry so competive, nothing here makes the film worthwhile. GI60S'S doesn't even deliver what little it promises - exciting actions scenes and adrenline pumping speacil effects. A very un-important and forgettable film.
